  1. Re:This is sad. (one of slashdots problems) on Giving Up on Mars Polar Lander · · Score: 2

    The fact that this message made it to the top score, albiet marked as funny, is one of the problems I think slashdot needs to address. I am supposed to believe that someone posting on slashdot just happens to be smarter than NASA? When was the last time you landed a probe on another planet? NASA has done it a good number of times.

    NASA can do things right hundreds of times with no comment, but as soon as they screw the pooch, boom, here come the smart-asses out of the wood work who believe they have all the facts and know exactly how to fix the problem.

    >You can only cut corners so far, for the mass >media's benefit.

    Is this the same mass media where you got all of your information? jeepers man!

  2. How does this really effect anyone on AOL Nation · · Score: 1
    Let's cover the bases of how it might effect me for comparison.

    I log onto the internet via ISDN and a local ISP. I read some news on slashdot, I check out a couple of other news pages (CNN being one). I look at some game news, I might even cruise over to google and search for Carpinus caroliniana to see if any new articles have been written about this tree. So what, how has AOL controlled my net experience? Have they somehow limited the sites I can reach, have they pushed other sites off the net? Hardly.

    4 months from now Roadrunner will be available in my area. As of right now I will pay for installation and then continue to pay my old ISP $9.99US to host my web page because Roadrunner is a closed system and I can't choose IPS's. Either AOL forces Roadrunner to open up, or it doesn't. Either it gets better or no change, big deal.

    These FUD's about big company mergers and the end of society as we know it are getting to be quite silly.

  3. What Problem? on Are MP3 Web Sites Unfair to Indie Artists? · · Score: 1

    I know that mp3.com is not the only place to distribute music, but FWIW:

    I just copied the following from the artist signup page of mp3.com. I had to sign up as an artist to get to it, but here it is. I don't see any issues with this agreement. I don't see why an artist can't sell their songs to another label and I don't see anything about an artist giving up any rights. In other words, what is MP3.COM doing that specificly hurts the Indie artists?

    From mp3.com ->

    The following terms apply to both the Standard Program and to the DAM System:

    1. Ownership. You retain ownership of the copyrights and all other rights in your songs, subject to the non-exclusive rights granted to us under this agreement. You are free to grant similar rights to others during and after the term of this agreement.

    2. Termination. You may terminate this agreement at any time by so notifying us; the agreement will terminate upon our actual receipt of such notice. We may terminate this agreement at any time by so notifying you; the agreement will terminate upon your actual receipt of such notice or three days after we have sent a notice of termination to the e-mail address which you supply to us below. Upon termination, all of our license rights terminate, except that we retain those rights necessary for us to sell any CDs or other tangible goods which we have produced prior to the date of termination which incorporate any of your Material (as defined in section 3 below). Our obligation to pay you amounts due to you under this agreement survives termination. Also, sections 3 and 6 below survive termination.

    .... sections 3 and 6 hold them harmless and make sure you have the rights to give the music away in the first place.

  4. Re:proof, sources, detail on Crypto Advocate Under Investigation by FBI · · Score: 1

    my bad,

    I did not get to the ZD article yet, that did provide some more detail and links to the actual documents. So, while NT mag had a newsbyte, ZD had pretty good detail.

  5. proof, sources, detail on Crypto Advocate Under Investigation by FBI · · Score: 1

    Where are their sources, where is the proof, where is the detail. Did they run out of web space and couldn't post a more detailed article :)

    I don't trust 30 second newsbytes, especially when they are via a web page. I see that not everyone here has fallen for the old conspiracy theory anyway.

    IMHO, Investigations are started because someone believes a wrong had been committed. Those that actually commit the wrongs usually get busted, those that haven't done anything wrong usually cry foul play. The ones that don't cry foul aren't newsworthy, so we never hear about them.

    Not that I trust the FBI now, but I want better reporting.

  6. Re:Infinite Connections --> Too Big Communities on Are BBS-Like Communities Dead? · · Score: 2

    This thread is a good example of too much information. I don't have time to read all fo these posts, but slashdot does a pretty good job of letting me filter out most of the garbage. My ISP hosts a news server and offers a couple of local newsgroups. Many good conversations take place in there because it is limited to maybe 20 people tops.

    As far as flames wars go, this is user error. If everyone would learn not to reply to a post that insults the the flamers would fade away. IMHO

  7. Re:what do you think you are doing? on Unreal Tournament Not To Include Linux Executable · · Score: 1

    From what I read I got the impression that they weren't prepared to 'support' the linux version. In other words, someone using linux calls up with a problem and they have no clue. It doesn't sound so unreasonable to me to offer the version online, but requiring the retail box to run it.
