I am a windows XP user. I've had redhat installed before with win2k, dual boot, but haven't used Linux since I upgraded to XP. I just looked at the Suse page and could not find anything under install that led me to believe the two operating systems would work together. I am a clueless windows user. If you want me to run linux, and Suse looks real pretty, I need to have my hand held a bit more.
I have plenty of space, and a real desire to try out Suse, but not at the risk of damaging my XP install.
I enjoyed reading Salon for entertainment. Some of the articles (precious few) actually made me think, but most were just liberal rants about the current corrupt establishment that, quite frankly, were not very good reporting.
I don't see the value in paying for an opinion rag when you can get that from blogs.
Isn't that the simplest answer, regardless of your political persuasion?
this will probably be lost in all the posts, but in my opinion this is the biggest reason. You can talk about instability or security all you want, but my WinXP system just plain works and it works well. All the fighting Microsoft has done to keep competition in line and monopolize the desktop has yet to HURT the end user. Yea yea, I can be on the other side as well and talk about how it CAN hurt the end user, but it hasn't.
You see I have two kids, a wife, and hopefully a job. My hobby is not tweaking my system, like a lot of Linux people do. And as far as stability, this is a big joke when it comes to the user desktop. Windows is far more stable than Linux when it comes to the desktop (NOT SERVER, DESKTOP). Stuff works and doesn't need to be tweaked or configured to work.
Or to put it another way:
If a windows app crashes its because windows is unstable. If a Linux app crashes its because its not configured correctly.:)
So really, I expect most readers know the answer to the question, but its always fun to argue about it. I also find it interesting that a more recent article is talking about how security patches are available for Linux but noone is applying them. I think that's why Microsoft added automatic updates, don't you?
Someone making that new movie thought up a great campaign. I see this as nothing more than one of those extremely unlikely events that makes a movie, and then makes to to the press.
-------------- "Don't they have something better to do during the summer than hack our site?" asked the RIAA representative, who asked not to be identified. "Perhaps it at least took 10 minutes away from stealing music."
Yeah. We get it. They're internet hackers on summer break, so they must be stealing music! ---------------
Actually I think this might be true, and I have no love for the RIAA. I mean, do you think it isn't true? This era of theft and dishonesty has to end at every level, not just at corporate. People make music, people charge money, people pay money to buy music. Taking music that you did not pay for is stealing, no matter how bad the RIAA sucks. Stealing is wrong under any circumstance, IMO. I have stolen music on my PC, am I the only one who did it? Do I have any valid justification for doing it?
The correct way to fight this battle is with your wallet. Don't buy or pay unreasonable prices for anything you don't need. If the price matches your enjoyment then pay it, but don't get all huffy because other consumers might be willing to pay for a flawed system, that is their right.
If the artist don't like the system its up to them to find alternatives and us (consumers) to use them. If someone tries to trample your rights then protest legally, but never support an illegal protest if you want your viewpoint to be heard.

Example, my wife puts in a CD of James Taylor and hits the random button on our Toshiba DVD player and listens to hours of music. She doesn't care that those are 192K MP3's I ripped from the individual albums and put on one cd, I just tell here all his albums are on this CD, play it.
That's progess!:) My DVD player only cost $130, so much for oppresive MP3 fees.
I may be an idiot, but how the heck do you set up the newsreader to log into a news server (like supernews). I couldn't find it anywhere, and it seems like a major oversite. I was lookign forward to dumping Outlook Express.

"Don't buy Windows games. I hear how people can't justify paying full price for an "old game" that Loki ported while they can't stop themselves from running out and buying Quake3 the second it is released at full price for Windows. Dear lord, "
Dear Lord is what I say too. Computers are meant to be used, this isn't a religion is it? (that might be rhetorical) If I want to play the latest game I buy it, I don't wait for a port because... well because anything. Granted I didn't buy a MAC when Simcity first came out (I think that was the MAC first game)...
A computer can do no better than become an appliance for work / entertainment / education. For the vast majority it's about getting the task done, not playing around with the configuration.
I am failing to come up with words to describe how foreign this statement is to me. Why should I wait again? Like he said, its just a game, I'll buy it when I want to play it.
I don't see a life for companies who convert games to Linux and hope people will wait to buy them. Some will, but that market is extremely small.
My 3 days of mods just expired, so I can't mod you up, sorry. I have to say I agree with what you say. Unfortunatly everyone wants to ignore the costs and get everything for free. I think they made a pretty good point what value they think they contibute to the database.
I'm trying to figure out why people are so upset about this. I am going to assume (yea, its a big one), that this company and their team of scientists worked really hard to invent these tiny magnets that make cool things work. They patented the invention and then sold rights to various manufacturers to use these 'inventions' in their products. Along comes some other companies that are using the same 'inventions' and they aren't paying anything. This upsets the companies that did pay up and threatens the revenue stream of ?Magnaquench? so they sue to stop the infringement of their patents.
What exactly is wrong with this? Sure, some patents are stupid, but this one seams reasonable. Not every company is as evil as Rambus. There is nothing wrong, IMO, with protecting _your_ inventions by using the patent process.
What this really seems to be is the free beer mentality at work. Let someone else pay to research and invent something and I will use (steal) it and tell everyone just how cool technology is.
ok, so you don't like what they say. So What? Does that give anyone the right to try and 'subvert' it. Doesn't everyone have the right of free speech and association? Oh, I guess it's only if you approve?
but, if you shouldn't complain if a web site doesn't look good with your browser. I have a personal web page that is pretty basic, but I have a couple of tags that older browsers do not support.
It really gets me when people say it doesn't look right and I should change it. From now on I will use the link to the update site when I get these emails, but I will not redirect people just because they are running an older browser. That is a bit like a popup ad.
>Yeah! I saw an accident the other day on the >highway before the cops got there. They should >have confiscated my car - I was driving at the >time after all.
You drove by.... no crime. You didn't get out
of your car and search around to try and find out what happened. It seems so blatently obvious to me, yet my post gets moderated as a troll.
Out of curiosity he purposly snooped around a crime scene trying to figure out what happened. This whole time he is filling up logs with his IP and making it harder to find the real perpetrator.
.You can review and erase bad photos on the digi cam
.Digital cameras are usually used to replace point and shoot, not pro equipment. If you consider the typical quality of point and shoot photos, there is no reason not to use digital. The ease of access and simplicity of storage (just burn a CD) is far better than saving negatives and keeping photos in boxes (you did mention this).
.I have taken thousands of pictures of my new (well, not so new now:) son. I could have never afforded this volume using traditional media. The vast majority of my sons photos are either viewed on the computer, or as 4x6 and wallets that I print out on my inkjet. For portraits photos we go to a studio.
.I could use the excuse that I might take a great photo on digital and wish it was on film, but I might not have taken the photo in the first place if I had to pay for it.
I shouldn't have to use flags or do anything... they make the claim of being better, but only in crippled mode? I think they will be better eventually, but I want more info. I was a bit suprised that they already claimed superiority over the mp3 format.
The last test I did with my ears, vs LAME 3.84, LAME was easily (subjective) better. I encode everything at 160 stereo, and Ogg just didn't sound as good at the maximum bitrate available.
The LAME team takes extra care in analyzing the output and comparing it the FhG encoder and the previous version of LAME (just in case something broke). How does the Ogg team compare results? Is it with listening tests?
I just installed RA last night on win2k, funny coincidence. ZoneAlarm from ZoneLabs started warning me as soon as I restarted that something was up. First, Real Jukebox wanted to access the internet. Now way, Sorry. Then something called main_program (I think, this is from memory) tried to access the internet. Again, no way.
At this point I started to uninstall all the crap that I didn't ask for. When I got to the Zip download thing, after I hit the uninstall program they provided, main_program wanted to access the internet again. jeez, these people are desperate for stats I guess.
So not only does is keep track of download stats, it also wants to know when you install and un-install the app.
I haven't paid anything for IE yet? I haven't payed anything for MS Media.
While there may be a good argument to this, the message that got moderated up by the 'moderate any anti microsoft message up committee' or MAAMMUC, is just plain stupid. Can we have some intelligent examples please?
