Since all these effects are built on top of the Prototype javascript library, you can use them standalone or with any server side language. Just download the effects and the Prototype library (be sure to get the pre-release version) and you should be good to go. Nothing Ruby or Rails specific, but Rails does have some predefined helper functions to make it easier to use the AJAX effects.

I believe Services in OS X depend entirely on the Cocoa framework and are usually automatically enabled in Cocoa applications. If the Services menu is greyed out then chances are good that you're in a Carbon or other non-Cocoa app.

  6. Re:Here at the office... on OpenOffice.org Resource Kit · · Score: 1

I can definiatly confirm your experience with fubarred Office documents. I usually have a steady stream of students and faculty that come into my office with tear-filled eyes and a floppy full of broken Word or Powerpoint files. Files that are so broken that Word and Powerpoint absolutely refuse to open them. However, OpenOffice seems to be significantly more tolerant of screwed-up Office files. It's opened and resaved every munged file I've thrown at it.

So while OpenOffice may not reproduce Office docs with 100% percent accuracy 100% of the time, I still think the import filters are pretty damn good.

  8. Outclass and Popfile on Anti-Spam Software for Mom? · · Score: 2, Informative

Outclass is a free Outlook plugin for Popfile. It has a nice easy interface that exposes most of the functionality of popfile. Outclass directly integrates with Popfile, instead of using it as a proxy, allowing Outclass to filter any email account that Outlook supports. That includes IMAP and Exchange accounts.

IMHO, it's a definiate must-have if you use outlook.
