  1. Am I the only one? on Inside Microsoft's New F# Language · · Score: 1

Am I the only one, who thinks about Brain F#$%@ while reading about "Microsoft's New F# Language?" But seriously, I think Fis is quite an interesting language (even if not quite so as, say, Perl 6 is), but it will need lots of marketing to push C and C++ out of the OO market, which will be difficult as h*ll, even for Microsoft. Even if everyone in proprietary software industry switches to Fis, there will still be enough C in free software projects to consideribly slow the deployment. But it was still quite an entertaining reading, even if it hasn't provided any outstanding insight. Robyn Peterson's articles have never disapointed me, however this time I feel a little bit bored. I guess I was expecting too much from Microsoft language development people, but on the other hand, how far could they possibly go, with all this legacy backward compatibility? I think they have done quite a good job this time, considering it's Microsoft. Who knows, I may even write some of my new projects in Fis. I hope it will be supported by GCC soon enough.

Canadian University to Begin Training Hackers! They plan to be the third world largest hacker training ground, just after MIT and Berkley! Watch news at 9 pm! *sigh*

Why is Hosted Disk Space So Expensive?

Why is espresso so expensive? Repeat after me, kids: Because you pay for more than just the cost of ingredients! Paying for espresso you pay for everything, like the real estate, employees, advertisement, marketing, music, furniture, equipment, atmosfere, etc. Isn't that kind of obvious, for people on SlashDot, who I believe have higher IQ than the average Joe Drunk?

  4. Yes on Star Wars Galaxies Console Versions On Hold · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, programming console games is a real pain. (I have yet to try writing anything complex, but believe me, even a simple Test Drive 2 clone can be a real pain in the a*s.) Targeting PC's is easier not only because of superior hardware quality and better performance, but also (or maybe should I say, first of all) because of cryptic APIs and subtle differences between platforms, while with PC you have just one target, you only have to master DirectX (which can be hard sometimes, of course, but there's only one standard to learn) and this is why some of the great gems aren't being published for the console market. I really do hope that when console manufacturers start to use Linux as their official operating system, this situation will change, as they will be one standard for console programming (glibc, SDL, OpenGL, OpenAL, etc.). But meanwhile, I guess, I'll just have to play Star Wars Galaxies on my PC... *sigh*

  5. Games quality and complexity on Dyack Talks Metal Gear Solid - Twin Snakes · · Score: 1

Great article. I wonder when will consoles get to the point, where personal computers are now, quality- and speed-wise. I think, that as soon as they achieve that goal, they will really start to push gamers' PC's out of the market. (Lindows, anyone?) Great reading though.

Actually, the biggest problem will be with older, buggy firmware, which people will use due to the higher speed. This is not the first time IEEE has made a similar mistake... *sigh*
