"when enough people start making a "mistake" such as misusing "beg the question," it is no longer a mistake."
I think that's a helluva way to run a choo-choo. Basically, it says if enough people can't or won't do something the "right way," then we are required to call the "wrong way" an alternative (or, worse yet, a replacement) "right way." If everyone speeds, then the speed limit must go up. If everyone steals from work, then stealing must be tolerated.
I mean, sure, that attitude certainly explains a lot of the problems society faces, but it also means there's no hope of anything ever getting better.
You do realize that Ritalin has the opposite effect on people with ADD/ADHD than it does on 'normal' people? In that it actually slows your brain down enough to work properly?
This is not precisely true.
It's speed, but the first effect it has is to improve the brain ability to control itself. Instead of the mind wandering off a million directionless directions, the brain gets the stones to whip the thoughts into a line for a while.
In my experience, there was still very much a noticeable stimulant effect, despite the fact that I was, indeed, much better able to concentrate on some thing in particular. There were also problems of crashing in the evenings or upon missing a dose... even problems if I drank too much iced tea at lunchtime (yes, caffeine will also "help" ADD/ADHD to a certain extent, for a certain period).
I was greatful to be able to put the amphetamine prescriptions behind me, not because they "work differently" on those with ADD/ADHD and slowed things down, but because they work pretty much exactly the same as on everyone else and sped things up, too much, at times. Strattera worked for me, if anyone finds that helpful.
To be offened you have to choose to be offended, irritated, upset, whatever the hell the receivers problem is.
I used to try to make this point on a bulletin board I host... but at this late date, I've given up and just don't post there, anymore.
The real reason flame wars happen is that some people enjoy being offended, irritated, upset, or whatever the hell... some people enjoy the flame wars, so they'll always happen, no matter the topic or the local consensus on the topic.
Actually, the shift in focus should be from those collecting the bounties to those contributing to them.
If contributing a couple hundred dollars per year toward improving F/OSS becomes seen as a viable alternative to spending that money upgrading software just because the vendor says "it's time." then the bounties will grow.
Anything I think I'll need to use again, I copy over to StickyBrain. You can set up multiple hotkey combinations to copy into different main categories within StickyBrain from any other application. Once it's in there, StickyBrain has a lot of options for coding and viewing information different ways, and an integral browser feature that allows you flip through your sorted/selected entries as easily as surfing the web.
After three I figured out HOW it was happening... after four, I found out WHO.

Um, that's "all ready" asploded.
