That's a non-solution. Did you read the article? It requires that you send authentication tokens via the open airwaves. That is NOT the way to run a secure system. Anybody with two braincells or more can see that any yokel can just fire up airsnort and grab the information out of the air. What a worthless proposal. Wireless will never be secure.
Or at least of questionable merit. It encrypts at the line level. I guess that's great... until it reaches a router (like it would have to, if you use it on any kind of network). Then, as soon as it does, you pretty much have to re-encrypt it. Which means you have to completely trust every router in the network. Exactly how useful is this?
I can't imagine recommending the Replay TV to anybody. After SonicBlue declared bankruptcy, I would be wary of buying one simply because the future of the service is in jeopardy. If there's not service for the devices, then they're pretty useless, aren't they?
Anyway, yeah, it'd be cool to have some kind of software solution to all this (preferably Free software), but as it is, it just doesn't seem feasible, mostly because TiVO hardware is cheap and a large part of what you're paying for is the guide service, anyway.
It's not even winter! I know you Nucks have it tough, but it's summer, for Christ's sake! Get outside and do something!
