Of course, it isn't the word itself one should be offended by, but the intended meaning. If you use a word like "nigger" or "kike" actually intending to insult the people those derogatory terms refer to, then that would be something I'd get offended about. On the other hand if you used those terms for another reason (like quoting Mark Twain, or this discussion), then I wouldn't be offended at all. Either way, I wouldn't attempt to take away your right to say it.

    I agree 100%

I believe everyone has the right to freedom of speech, and everyone has the right to freedom to not listen :)

You can still insult with "common words" such as stupid, dummy, "what are you? stupid?", etc.

I think what you said, pretty much sums it up!
Just because we have to freedom to offend people doesn't mean we should, without thinking about the consequences. And the people that are easily offended, need to lighten up a little.

I agree, that CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM helps everyone. Since NO gui is perfect (they all have their cool little features and quirks) discussing what makes a good GUI great, helps to design more user-friendly UI's. I don't have time to invest X hours learning a specific GUI, and most people also don't have that kind of spare time -- I have better things to do, like writing game code :)

    > This article notes many features present in Windows Whistler (such as an advanced taskbar, ... )

BeOS has had this feature for while. It is very slick. Let's say you open up 10 copies of your web browser (NetPositive) you DON'T see 10 huge buttons spread across the task bar (Deskbar, or the Twitcher), only one. All instances of the same program are listed vertical. IMHO, this is making more efficient use of limited screen real estate.

Which brings me to my next point:

The stupid application title bars DON'T extend across the WHOLE top, in BeOS. All that space between the application name, and the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons are simply WASTED in most GUIs. Not so, in BeOS. Even more cooler (usefull!) in BeOS, is that you can SHIFT-DRAG any title bar (Be calls this the window tab) along the top of the window! (The direct link to "A Look at the BeOS Windows" doesn't work for some reason) Makes it extremely easy to switch among visible apps.

Seems like everyone, Be, etc, includes virtual desktops/workspaces by default, EXCEPT Microsoft!

And who can forget Be is FREE!

... now only if Be would open source BeOS, and make it true multi-user, it would last "forever" and have a chance of becoming a popular OS. :) This is the one strength that Linux has, TONS of developers working world-wide. Of course Linux's "main fault" is lack of consistent vision, and a lot of redundant work. i.e. Browse sourceforge, and ask yourself do we REALLY NEED Yet-Another-Text-Editor?

Well, I've probably come off as a BeOS zealot. Far from it, I LIKE and use: Win2K, BeOS, Linux, and BSD. Use the respective tool for the proper job, since when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail, something Linux may fall into, if it's not carefull. :)

If you need some time to run errands in the morning, (which I find is invaluable) or in the afternoon you can, not a big deal.

There is a reason for that. It's called "keep yourself out of the niche very-low-sales-high-profits high-end-machines market." (Something SGI does the exact opposite of. No, NOT a flame/troll, just an opinion.)

We developers are between a rock and hard place: We want the game to run on as many machines as possible (maximize sales, sacrife quality) since not everyone upgrades their computers every 6 months, and at the same time we want the "horsepower" so we can have more advanced physics, graphics, etc (maximize oopmh-factor, minimize sales.)

You could see that we would be shooting ourselves in the foot, if a game only required the absolute fastest shipping CPU +/-X Mhz at [game] gold time (when we ship the game.)

So what do we do? We compromise:

One of the hardest parts in game development right now, is scalability. Level-of-Detail certainly helps here, as does skeletal animation (faster machine have smoother animation.)

Fortunaly games tend to err on the side of "requiring the latest and greatest" cpu, to help force prices to come down from the stratosphere :)

People don't realize exactly how complicated the real world is until you start trying to simulate and model it. Why do we have "tiling" and "texture mapping?" Because we don't have enough ram to give each model an unique texture. Why do we "loop" music? because again, we don't have enough storage space for an unique 3 hour long sound track (allthough multi-cd games do this.)

    i.e.
While I was an undergrad, even though we used the "universitie's computers", any code we wrote was ours, because we never signed anything that said otherwise. (Copyright is automatically applied to the author when no previous agreements are in force.)

To get to the bottom of the issue, you want the lawyers to specifically find where the "ownership clause" is currently mentioned in ALL contracts that employees sign, to sort the mess out.. (You had to sign SOME legal documents before you could work either as employee or contractor, right?!) so check that fine print!

In the future, you school should explicity have a clause added, stating, who owns what,to prevent future mis-understandings (and frivoulous lawsuits.) Typically, a business will say something along the lines of "anything invented on company time becomes property of the company" which is reasonable and standard practice. As a game developer I can give my opinion. (Hopefully the other game developers around here will chip in, like John Carmack, or Corrinne Yu ;-)

The best way to break into the biz is to make a demo, a small project, or even a small game. With that last option, I'm not intentionally being recursive. I'll give a list of things one could do in the process of making a game, (you'll have to find the one you like doing) and the steps you could do to get your foot in the door.

Since you specifically said you wanted to be a game programmer, I'll list the programming options first. =P

    i.e.

A.I. Put together a Quake Bot (since the rest of the game is already written & works. :-)

Gameplay. Write a mod, ala Counter-Strike, or TeamFortress. Balance it for 4, 8, 12, or even N players. Take a mod for Diablo and modify it.

Graphics. Write Pacman, an early Ultima clone, or even a 3D Engine.

Math. Write a 2D physics engine. Now make it 3D.

Art. Make a good looking low-poly char. Create some textures. Create a UT level.

Music. Write some tunes, and drop them into a game so people can see how you set the atmosphere.

The trick is to find something you enjoy doing, and put together a portfolio of your talents. (For me, it was optimizating texture mapping code, which landed me my first "real" job at EA, years ago.)

So where do Consoles fit into this?

The answer is: "Can you get all the development tools" ? Obviously you won't be able to get a PS2 SDK, so look at your options: As a student, I know it's hard to afford the full blown MS Visuall C++. Look for a "academic version." If you're running Linux, you have gcc, SDL, and other tools & libs available.

Hope this was a helpfull start.
