    I want nothing to do with guns, and don't own one.

    Unfortunately that doesn't stop the criminals. But I digress.

    Its considered bad nettiqute to attack a person, and not the discussion, which I see you didn't even attempt. I'm awaiting a civil and intelligent discussion.

    Look, I travel
    i) WITHOUT a driver's license, and
    ii) WITHOUT my car being registered by the government / state (hence no state license plate.)
    and I have
    a) never got a ticket for driving without a license, or
    b) been given a ticket for speeding.

    How come?

    Because I'm exercising my Right To Travel.

    Who grants a business license? The owner or the government?

    Corporations are a legal entity CREATED by the government. You can look it up in Black's Law Dictionary.


    Corporations are popular because they protect the liability of the owner. Why do you think we have so many LLCs (Limited Liability Company) ?

    And no, you DON'T need a business license to enage in free enterprise. How do you think people did business BEFORE companies existed? They used trusts. Why? Limitied Liability again.

    I agree. Whatever rights we didn't give to the government, we keep.

    But just try to tell people that you DON'T need a license and registration to travel in a car. (I don't have either and no law officer has ever given me a ticket for driving without a license.) See my post: "Speeding is not a crime" if you want proof that Travelling is a Right.

    MS just has to set up another company, lets call it Microsoft Research, outside the US jurisdiction, which would hold the copyright to the source, and own 95% of the US company. It could then license the codebase back to MS, since the contract would be private between MS and MS Research.

    Wouldn't really matter if MS is split up now would it? The only thing the Government could do is hassle the US based company, since that companies is a legal entity created by the government under the US jurisdiction.

    You're absolutely right: There is NO law which states you MUST have a US drivers license to drive a car in the US.

    Doesn't everyone know that "you must register your vehicle with the Department of Motor Vehicles" ?
    Oh wait, there is also NO law which states you MUST submit a car's MSO to the government/state? :-)

    Its not about breaking the law, its verifying what the law REALLY says.
    i.e. why does the Declaration of Independence spell united States of America (uSA) with a small 'u' ane make the distinction from United States?


    For all those considering of getting an IDP, remember that an International Drivers Permit is NOT valid in the place of issue, so don't go to AAA and get one.

    I agree that GUI's are more user friendly then a CLI, but there is still a paradigm that must be learned.

    I've taught some students that have had a hard time with getting over the concept of nesting folders, simply because theier was no real world analogy.

    What may be intuitive to you, may not be to someone else. Remember we're all ignorant in some field of study.

    I thought the best way to decide what OS to use, was to, use what works for you, instead of deciding from that you don't like how some people preach their OS religion. :-)

    Thats why I use Linux, BeOS and NT. I need to do cross-platform development. (And occasionaly when I'm forced to use DirectX to play a few games that require it, that piece of crap called Windows 95)

    Microsoft is LICENSED in the State of Washington. When you go to the government to ask for permission to engage in Free Enterprise you have to play by their rules. The GOVERNMENT granted them the BUSINESS LICENSE.

    Question for the day: How did people do business before companies were around?

    Answer: Usually themselves (and they were directly liable), or form a trust (why do you think we have anti-trust laws?)

    I agree. You sort of paraphrased my point.
    a) At the time, people thought that Germany would NEVER be re-united.
    b) It didn't happen over night. It took time.

    Sounds like exactly the same situtation Linux was in a year ago.
    a) Nobody thought Linux would ever over-take MS. (We still have a ways to go obviously)
    b) We're making progressing.

    Yeap. I use Linux and BeOS at home ;-)
    And we use Groupwise at work.

    Yeah, I don't buy the Linux = Communism analogy either. I believe a better analogy would be: Communism (proprietary software) places power in the government (developer), not the people (users), which liberty (GPL) does.

    Unfortunately not. Take a look at politics. If that isn't proof that people are sheep, I don't know what is.
    i.e. Look at how many people fall for the "I promise to cut taxes if I get elected" line.

    Getting back on topic...

    The only thing we CAN do is to KEEP pushing for alternatives. [Us] Linux users are finally starting to recognize how the Mac users have felt all these past years. i.e. "I use an alternate OS [Linux,Be,etc], and we want support damit." (Except that we have stable OS in contrast to the MacOS. No Mac flames please.)

    Eventually the Linux community will build up a large enough user base that simply can't be ignored. Sure, its a pain-in-the-butt now, but the more we show people the ADVANTAGES of open source, via PROPER advocacy instead of spouting off "DIE M$ DIE", the easier it will get in the future. We can fight half-baked ideas now, or wait and try to overcome against impossible odds the entrenched proprietary and defacto sub-standards that MS likes to use, in the future. The choice is ours TODAY.

    i.e.
    We're finally starting to see more games on Linux. We're making great progress considering 2 years ago the only commercial game we had was Quake !

    The freedoom (and price) is the strongest thing the open source community can use as ammonition.
    We have infinite ammo. With enough rounds, eventually what OS a person uses will become moot.

    The x86 instruction set is such as hack job its not even funny. Go take a look at some of the Motorola CPUs to see a nice orthogonal layout.

    x86 can't die soon enough.
