  1. yesterday news on It's Official: Black Holes Have Lots Of Mass · · Score: 1

That is a new low for Slashdot. An article about something which occurred 13 billions years ago?
What next? The weather forecast for the previous Big Bang?

  2. Re:Yeah, but what about... on What Does The Internet Look Like? · · Score: 1

The current issue of Wired refutes [wired.com] this statistic.

It does refute it, it just turns around it, without a single direct computation. And not even accouting the replacement of landlines by mobile phones, or the office lines, used by the same persons who already have a phone at home.

2,300% is huge, except when you start with nearly 0.

And the "if we assume original guess of half was right in 1994 (a big if)" takes 1/2 as the starting point, although it might have been higher, like "3/5 of the world hasn't made a call"... Just that "half" is easier to say.
  3. Resilience on Ask Dr. Vinton Cerf About the Internet · · Score: 1

Do you think the Internet is still resilient, able to withstand the disparition of any major concentration point?

If not, what could be done to restore this capacity?

  4. PM vs EM on Project Management For Programmers? · · Score: 1

Several functions are covered by the term Project Management: engineering management, techinal lead, management of project...

If you complain about Project Managers, it is because your company uses them to do exactly that, manage the project: making sure that the deliverables arrive on time, more or less answer the request from end customers or Product Managers, and in return gather their input or feedback. A project is also the immobilisation of a great deal of money, and someone as to be responsible for that.

That choice of the company calls for a counterpart of the Project Manager, with equal power in the "discussions", a Technical Leader which would enlight them in These Issues that are dear to your heart ;-) I mean the kind of discussions which also involve managers from documentation, quality assurance, even technical support (to ensure the future supportability of the product.), production manager...

I guess becoming a project manager will not be the right answer to your concern...

  5. Landmines design on First International Mine Detector Robots Competition · · Score: 1

I'm sure specialists will go there to get some ideas on how to make mines harder to detect!

I just think of these engineers who design landmines... Do they have any way of "pretending" they're not killing civilians?

Support the campaign to ban landmines.

ps: I've just seen that another comment asking for the support of this campaign, was marked as off-topic!? I can't help thinking some people'd better stick to toys, and OS wars...

  6. Re:Reduplication of efforts on ClosedBSD 1.0b Released · · Score: 1

Last time I read something about firewalls (from O'Reilly I guess), it seems just a bad idea to keep the log on the disk in case of an intrusion which breaks everything on that very disk.

  7. Yahoo has its own arbitrary restrictions on French Judge Demands Yahoo Censor Auctions · · Score: 1

Yahoo has rules regarding what can be auctionned. The judge is just asking Yahoo to enforce its own rules... "... you may not list or sell under any circumstances... any item that is illegal to sell under any applicable law..."
