  1. Basic Physics on NASA's Foam Test Offers Lesson in Kinetic Energy · · Score: 4, Insightful
    F = Ma

I'm surprised that the impact was ever taken so lightly. Paint chips drill holes into satellites and birds take down planes, any impact, given the forces involved with such vehicles has the potential to be catastrophic.

  2. Insider Trading? on Ballmer Sends Wakeup Call to Staff · · Score: 1, Offtopic
If he real feels that MSFT is in trouble, and that their upcomming technologies will fail to be winners in the marketplace, then does this dumping of stock qualify as insider trading?

But ok, I'll bite. Your just wrong. Last time I checked Slashdot, Fark, Metafilter, etc... were doing ok. The key is some moderation of the frontpage on the part of the maintainers, and some "don't read the damn story if your not interested" moderation on the part of the user.

  4. "Video Games Hone the Mind" on Modern Day Gamer Documentary · · Score: 3, Redundant
is it a non-productive use of time?

Not according to this article from the Associated Press on research conducted at the University of Rochester:

(AP) All those hours spent playing video games may not be wasted time after all: A new study suggests action-packed video games like "Grand Theft Auto III" and "Counter-Strike" may sharpen your mind.

Researchers at the University of Rochester found that young adults who regularly played video games full of high-speed car chases and blazing gun battles showed better visual skills than those who did not. For example, they kept better track of objects appearing simultaneously and processed fast-changing visual information more efficiently.

  6. NASA Won't React on Rescue Mission For European Space Industry · · Score: 3, Insightful
"How will NASA react to this news after being the dominant space agency over the past three decades?"

NASA won't react. The sad truth is that right now American society is leaning far more towards guns than butter. The reality for NASA is that American pride no longer sores on NASA wings. (Note: I'm not endorsing this view, just expressing popular culture). The reality is that the drive in congress is just not there for supporting NASA, as it's far easier to woo voters with bribes and fears on TV, than with pictures of engineers behind control stations.

There will be speeches at NASA HQ, but no money from congress.

  7. This is good for Both - Like Apple on Palm to Buy Handspring · · Score: 3, Insightful

This "is a good thing (tm)" for both companies. The major competition for the PalmOS platform is no longer Handspring, but the explosion of PocketPC based products. By consolidating, Palm will be able to avoid brand dilution, and put up a united front against Microsoft in the handheld market. This is very similar to the move Apple made a few years back to reign in the clones.

  8. Definition == Slippery Slope on Violent Video Game Restriction Struck Down · · Score: 3, Insightful

The problem is when you try to actually start defining what constitutes "violent games" or speach, etc... you wind up with thought police. Fortunately, courts have had the wisdom in this case to throw out all of the "you'll know it when you see it" arguments. I mean you could argue that Mario encourages violence against animals and drug use and get some yokul to picket Toys R Us.

  9. Re:UI Consistency on Interview With Ximian's Nat Friedman · · Score: 2, Insightful

The problem is that with such a large percentage of the desktop market, there is a consistent UI, MSWindows (2000, XP, whatever). It's hard to get away from the "it doesn't look like windows" complaints and appeal to larger than niche markets.
