Actually the FastTrak system is used for bridges as well. Most bridges have a carpool lane that is free during certain hours of the day for HOV (2-3+ people). Only in So Cal is there a toll road that also happens to use FastTrak
More about names. I had a baseball coach named Michael Hunt... really no joke... however he insisted on being called Michael or Mr. Hunt!
I went to school with someone named Sterling Silver. Mr. & Mrs. Silver apparently thought it would be funny.
It is facinating reading all of the different theories revolving around the two camps. ADD/ADHD IS real and ADD/ADHD IS NOT real.
The is not real have "helpful" ideas such as: Turn off the TV. Kids will be kids, let them be. It causes Tourettes, addiction, panic attacks, dumb children, more idiots, drug society.
The hardest falsehood to overcome is the one that is only partially or potential true. For example, Tourettes syndrome can be aggrevated by Ritalin. However there are children taking it to alleviate the symptoms of the syndrome.
The other concerns are all possible, but not ALWAYS a problem. Many people who say it does not exist do not have it themselves, and do not know someone suffering from the affliction.
I was totally anti-drug, anti-ritalin before I met my wife. She was diagnosed while before we were married. I was against her taking Ritalin (she was still in college). She, fortunately, disagreed. Her school performance inproved dramatically as did some associated conditions such as depression and anxiety (depression because she was failing and anxiety because she could not change it no matter what she did or how she studied).
She is not addicted, in fact hasn't taken it for quite a number of years. She developed some coping skills that were as important as the ritalin.
As with most medicine, it works for some people, dramatically. For some it works without major side-effects. For others who have this affliction, let us hope there is an alternative. For those that don't have this affliction, let's hope they or there parents have a clue and not medicate something that is normal.
However, to say it doesn't exist is mere elitism from those that are not afflicted. Something along the lines of a white person living in a majority white country saying there is no racism simply because they don't experience it.
The idea is not to sedate them. The idea is to give some order to their minds. This has nothing to do with naughty, but to do with success in school and work.
For some people (including my wife) Ritalin and their like help to keep focused. For some Ritalin works very well and is the difference between productive and bogged-down life.
Although I sympathize with your bad experience, I tend to want to stay away from generalizations. My wife was diagnosed with ADHD about 12 years ago. She took ritalin in college and she went from a c-d student to a b student. Much of this has to do with concentration and focus. She describes her thoughts as a flashing from one subject to another all with equal/high priority, and she is able to focus on one task, one though with the help of ritalin.
She does not take it currently, because she is nursing our third daughter, but she wishes she could because of the focus and clarity if gives to her.
Our oldest daughter likely has ADHD. She is struggling in school. We remind her that school is not the most important thing in life.
I agree that mindless conformity is bad. It reminds me of how some Native American tribes "honored" androgenous people as a special type of person. Where our society has in the past and currently doesn't know what to do with such people. We tried to "make" them one sex or another just so they could conform.
I think ritalin can help some people. As with any narcotic substance, caution surely is advised.
Isn't the failure of communism the fact the humans are not "perfect" and actually desire power (money can be power) over others? No Government was cited as a benefit of socialism/communism. I thought Government was for the protection of the people from other people. I can pursue work or dreams far better if I don't have to constantly worry about my own protection.
If people were "perfect," it is could be said that no government was necessary, but certainly no communist or socialist government I know of has ever achieved even a slight decrease in government, let alone none.
Any time you have something of value, some one will try to take it from you. I can program a computer and thankfully I trade this asset for other things of value to me (food, house). I am glad a farmer has something of value (food) that he can trade, because I could not easily grow my own food. Here are two people with something of value of which they both worked (and traded valuable time). There will always be someone with some measure of power over another. They would have to be "perfect" to not exploit that power. No form of government will change this. We can only try to protect ourselves from it.
Even if we all only did farming and all people shared all produce equally. I'm lazy, I do not work as hard as the next person. Do I get an equal share (unfair). If I get a share equal to some factor of the work I put out, you then have control over one person by another (the person determining the percentage). But then were does that unallocated produce go? Someone will get it and they will have power over those with less. Finally what about our talents? More food allows free time to create something. A weapon to take produce without working perhaps? Gangs of people would form because robbing is far easier than working.
There really is no end to this discussion because people are imperfect. For every benefit of a form of government, there is someone willing and able to exploit that for personal gain. If I could exploit something I have so that I would not have to work ever again, I would, and everyone I know would (with certain moral limitations).
I was once part of a trade union, the people at the top made 500 times more than I did. A trade union is merely a way in which one person oppresses another. If every got paid the same, then everyone would want to have the easiest jobs and the people that have them would then have something of value (and power) from which they could trade for something else of value. This is capitalism and it happens everywhere, especially in between one person and another. For any rule, there are more than two people willing to break it for gain.
I am horrified at the amount power large corporations wield over the people elected to take care of my needs and protection. This should not happen. I challenge you to show me one form of government that cannot be corrupted by corrupt people. Even a system of beliefs or religion that preaches equality and egalitarianism can be corrupted by leaders and others with power.
Sorry for my rant. I do not have the answer, but Socialism/Communism is not a magic bullet.
First they ignore you
then they laugh at you
then they fight you
then you win
Microsoft is just following the standard process that Ghandi outlined for repressive overlords. Just as the British fought losing power in India, Microsoft is fighting to not lose power in general computing.
I've never run a mac, but what is faster always depends upon standards. Computer speed standards are a dime-a-dozen, which other computer manufacturers counter with their own standards. User groups insist their machine "feels" faster in real-world processing or that the standard is arbitrary. However, if there is a standard that is objective/quantifiable, the only concern is if the units are specified. Is 1 greater than 2? It is if you are comparing mach to miles/hour.
The ad should be allowed if they specify the comparison standard. And as all things caveat emptor.
It didn't make a judicial decision. It actual is an administrative decision. I'm not completely up on how the DMCA works, but I believe the Copyright office has the responsibility to give its interpretation of new ways the law is being used. This could be taken up with a federal court and the judge could decide differently and either side could appeal, as in a normal law case.
If I had only known that I was ahead of my time! I've been scanning and OCR'ing my books since 1997 with full text search and scanned page views and everything. Certainly others have done this before me. I don't see how anyone can think this is a novel idea (no pun intended).
In the 60s people predicted that by the 1980's the human work week would be reduced to 20-30 hours per week because computers would handle all the menial tasks. It was predicted we would then have a lot more leisure/free time to acheive self-actualization. It didn't happen; at least not where I live.
Economics has a way of changing as other aspects of our life change. Greed is one way of looking at it, or maybe call it materialism. Why do we work as long, or in many cases longer, than "we" did in the 60's? It is because there are more things to buy, more weath to gain. We cannot stop working because our society bases much of our worth on wealth.
Granted also, I enjoy many, many things we have now that did not exist in the 60's. Achievement does come at a cost, and that cost rises each year.
Back to the point. Even if robots take over many tedious or menial jobs, it does not mean the economy will collapse. It will mean that the economics of the time will change. If you worry about poverty because of loss of jobs, it is interesting to note that we have less poverty today than we did in the 1900's or earlier, even though we may have fewer menial jobs. Also note that poverty today has a different definition (at least in America) than it did 100 years ago.
So even if predicted correctly, the economy will change to meet the need. Jobs in different areas will be created that won't be created until robots "take over." One example might be robot repair. Until robots can repair themselves, here is a job that will be created.
With all of the "GPS" and other satelites going into orbit, we won't be able to send manned spacecraft into orbit for the fear of collision with space junk.
I think the kind of fibre optic cable they would use is the kind made from some form of plastic rather than glass fibre.
Actually the FastTrak system is used for bridges as well. Most bridges have a carpool lane that is free during certain hours of the day for HOV (2-3+ people). Only in So Cal is there a toll road that also happens to use FastTrak
