  1. Re:WiFi Question on University Bans Wireless Access Points · · Score: 1
How do you get your card to connect to the access point of choice?
Yeah, the article seemed to be lacking the important details. My understanding is that you tell your wireless card to talk only to connections with a given name, and provided the university did a smart job setting up their wireless, the students should be able to roam while staying connected to the network with the given name, regardless the strength of the other access points.

It seems the real problem is interferance due to people setting up access points on the same channel. I believe 802.11 b/g has 11 channels, so it would make sense if the university allowed students to use a few of these channels for private networks while reserving the rest for themselves. Then again, perhaps too much work to police this when you can just ban it outright.

Yes, you're correct that most high end cards these days are dual head. But a fast non-AGP option opens up the option of building low cost CAVE VR environments (4+ screens). I've been personally waiting for this for quite some time, and I'm hoping NVidia follows suit soon!

Not sure if anyone tried clicking on the link recently, but it doesn't give a 404, and instead gives an explanation as to why it isn't there. Unfortunate they can't still list it in the table of contents to reflect the fact that it was originally in the magazine... and you can likely imagine that the publisher did not act on its own in requesting that time online not sell the piece through their web site. Here's what you get when you click on the link at the memory hole: The page you've requested is an excerpt from a book by Brent Scowcroft and George H. W. Bush titled A World Transformed, which appeared in the March 2, 1998, issue of TIME magazine under the title "Why We Didn't Remove Saddam". It has been removed from our site because the publisher did not grant us rights to sell the piece online through the TIME archive.

When you pick up the phone to call ATA, what you are doing is harassment. You have nothing to sell them. In fact, you would almost certainly (with few exceptions) not be calling them unless you knew that thousands of your peers would also be calling.

Seems to me that many of us would have a reason to call as we would like to be put on their do not call list. I know that is what I'll ask when I call as this is always my first question when I get a call from any telemarketer. It is just unfortunate timing that everyone will be calling at the same time.
