    Blocking error prevents conversations from drifting into wrongness.

    That's no big deal when it's kids yammering about who's ricer has the baddest flames painted on the side of his Honda, but important when talking about the law.

    Or they might have used this method to reduce the number of platters, thereby reducing costs (though not necessarily prices).

    AMD was created because IBM demanded a second source for 8088 chips.

    Except that AMD was formed 10 years before the 8088 existed (1979), and didn't start second-sourcing the 8088 until 1982 or 1983.

    It might be old, it might be rusty, but it makes PILES UPON PILES OF CASH every single day.

    You may or may not be a holy University student who is beyond the mundane, but those of us who live in the real world are mightily impressed and more than a bit envious. (Even if we've used Linux for 10 years.)

    In the 7ish years I've been using the nvidia binary driver, I've *never* knowingly been roadblocked by some program saying, "Sorry, this won't work because xrandr doesn't exist."

    Yes, that's only one man's anecdote, but it's good enough for me.

    You'd *think* (because it's so reasonably logical) that "ubuntu classic" is plain jane GNOME 2.32. Sadly, it's not.

    When I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, I found that Unity was unusable.

    As was gnome classic. So I fell back to 10.10. Works like a champ...

    at that point you might as well install Debian or Linux Mint.

    It sucked in 11.04 and I have no doubt that it will suck even more in 11.10.

    The problem is that you can go too stable.

    PPAs are your friend. After trying 11.04 Natty and discovering that after 6 months Canonical still hasn't solved a jerky window problem between Compiz and the nvidia driver, I "upgraded" to 10.10 Maverick.

    Add in a bunch of PPAs and I've got up-to-date versions of all the software that I really care about,

    Ok, then your mentioning of her having a middle-class job was a NOP, sorry for assuming that you had a point.

    Unless there was some serious gender wage discrimination happening (I wouldn't be surprised if there were), "bank vice president" is not and never will be a middle class job.

    That she chose to live a middle class existence is her choice.

    As for him now being part of the 1% - so what? I'm a member of the 1% myself, but that hasn't stopped me from realizing that the status quo is unhealthy for us all.

    A lot of things about this society are fscked up: excessive wage disparity, shipping jobs to an environmental cesspool, transferring money from from people who work to people who haven't had a job in 4 generations (my mother the retired rural postwoman saw it with her own eyes for 25 years), the War On Drugs, million dollar lawsuits over absurdities, lawsuit-defensive medicine, Reality TV, Creationism, Roe v Wade, etc, etc.

    Because the grandmother instead (quite reasonably) financed her daughter's PhD in a non-science?

    "banker" in the way most people understand the term - i.e. an investment banker.

    This would be a Federal tax, though, replacing FICA, the Income Tax, and the Capital Gains tax.

    To simplify it even more and eliminate the need for deductions at all, don't tax food (no matter how bad for you or expensive) and utilities. But that's a slippery slope of lobbied-for exceptions.

    FICA has always irked me. A completely regressive tax that "progressives" keep increasing.

    capital gains taxes

    When you go down the slippery slope of having a tax for this and a tax for that, then the current situation is what you wind up with.

    Some sort of consumption tax would be the fairest, since everyone would pay the same percentage on purchases, whether it's low and middle class people buying store brand stuff at Wal-Mart or progressives buying Organic Gluten-Free Vinaigrette at Whole Paycheck and Triple Venti Soy Mocha at Starbucks.

    I used to think that there was a middle ground, but I've come to realize that the end result of social democracy is strong government control and that equates to either Communism or Corporatist Fascism.

    Remember two important maxims:

    • "The road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions" and
    • "The normal condition of mankind is tyranny and misery."
