  1. help on BusinessWeek Advocates Microsoft Piracy · · Score: 1

Why is business week trying to stop MS from shooting themselves in the foot? Honestly-- whether or not you like linux or other "alternative" operating systems having several widely used OSs encourages innovation. Microsoft has been trying harder than ever to create a worthwhile product and a lot of that has to do with trying to stay ahead of competition (especially in the server arena).

it isn't too much to ask for an internal programming team to know how to correctly use APIs the company developed. It *is* pathetic when they make mistakes like this. Just because they are big doesn't mean they have an excuse to be unorganized-- though having that meany employees is usually a consequence of being unorganized, and for that matter, usually makes things worse.

executing a program is one thing-- allowing the installation and execution of a virus is another.Since most windows users run as admins it is enough just to gain some access to the user's account (maybe through firefox) to install malicious code. Of course, as the article suggests, the "bug" only exists when IE7 is installed.
also... i'm pretty sure if windows was a person he would punch himself in the genitals if he was asked to.

All the intertwined security problems HAVE to be caused by firefox, right? I mean-- Microsoft surely knows how to write applications using their own APIs on the operating system *they* developed.

As much as I hate the windows 9x line it *did* force software companies and consumers alike to take a step forward. Also-- just because i'm 23 doesn't mean i don't remember windows 3.0 and some ncurses looking pile of crap that was part of the windows 2.x line.

windows 95 executed 32 programs and drivers with very few problems. My linux distro has both 32bit and 64bit drivers. The problem is most people will continue to install whatever they are told is "most compatible" and as long as that continues drivers are less likely to be rebuilt to support 64bit Windows. Honestly-- most of the time, it really is as simple as a recompile.

Is it really neccessary to support 32bit processors when it probably won't run on anything that doesn't support 64bit anyway? Kind of like Windows 3.1 being 16bit when it wouldn't run on anything older than a 386 (32bit) anyway.
