I'm a student employee of an organization on my campus that (among other things) support virus issues inside the residence halls. The majority of students use the university supplied email address along with its accompanying webmail interface. You explain to me the hundreds of people currently in our database that have viruses such as Netsky if they aren't be spread by people using webmail.
The viruses are attachments that students open and have nothing to do with Outlook's behavior (the supported email client is Eudora anyway). Lately, these infections rely on their own built in smtp server so an email client doesn't even need to be set up on the computer for it to spread. I can guarantee you 99% of the infections on my university occur because a student opened a file attachment from their webmail.
Education is normally associated with universities. If supposedly educated people in their early 20s (people who grew up with computers and are more comfortable with them) can't stop themselves from opening attachments, it isn't a stretch to believe the general population has a similar problem.
It seems to me there is a largely untapped market for notebooks. As I shop for one I am looking for a small, lightweight system with a long lasting battery. What I am NOT looking for is a 1Ghz+ system. I do not want a laptop that replaces my desktop but instead one that accompanies it. 500MHz is plenty for something that I would use for word processing, listening to music, and browsing the web.
As processor technology improves you'd thing the long battery life and other features would make a great combination with older processors but I never see that. The only choice is to buy an old laptop but it's big and bulky and usually used. On top of that the cost savings isn't enough to warrent such a device.
Why don't I ever see something like this:
Pentium III 500MHz
20GB Harddrive
128MB RAM
12 inch screen
4lbs or less
And some crappy 4MB video
for $500
I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I just want something portable yet more capable than a PDA. I don't want to replace my desktop.
I think it was a Number9 SR9 8MB something based on the Savage4 chipset. It came with my dad's IBM but it had definite overheating problems. Might want to try out the fan thing to see if it helps and then get something from a cooling company like cardcooler.com if it works.
That sounds exactly like the same problem I had with the looping sound. Turns out it was always related to the video card not being cooled enough. I took off the side of the case and put a window fan next to it. The machine never crashed. It would explain why it only happened during intense 3D applications like games.
