No matter what I am buying, I like to gather some information first and then contact the company myself when I have some questions ready regarding their products.
I tried that once too. They didn't get back to me. It's always the companies with minimal information (and *never* pricing) that don't bother replying to emails. They probably figure it's not worth worrying about the "small fish", but they way I look at it, if they can't handle that then I'm not going to give them the big deals.
Dumbass. Recently a group of Aussies who happened to be the "wrong" colour got handcuffed, detained for 5 hours, searched, etc just because some asshat rent-a-cop decided they were suspicious. They didn't have any "ties to the Middle East". The last girl I knew *from* the Middle East was a complete sweetie, but you'd probably want her bags searched and shoes removed if she was going to board your plane.
When did Americans turn into a bunch of whiny assed scared of everything softcock xenophobes? Arab looks does not equate to a fucking security threat. If you've got valid data to back up detaining someone then fine, but appearance is not a good enough reason. I, for one, am never going to the US if I can possibly avoid it. And yeh, I've done Asia and Europe, and plan to visit South America and the Middle East next. I expect others - especially non-caucasians - will do the same.
Hmmm, what CPU I want? 3Dnow!? SSE? 3000+ or 3000MHz? FX? AMD64? Opteron? HyperTransport? Oh I don't know, just give me that one *points to box on the shelf*.
Two theories here: 1) Baffle them with bullshit. Average punters get confused and just buy whatever the salesperson sells them. 2) Make stuff sound impressive and technological, so uninformed wannabe geeks can buy whatever AMD is making currently, and feel 7331 about it.
I'd say not. Ximian Desktop is a stand along product anyways, and most users prefer the KDE desktop. What's more, Ximian Desktop is really aimed at business users, while SuSE 9.1 is a "consumer" distro. It just doesn't make sense for them to include it by default. You can read a lot into press releases by what they don't say. Ximian Desktop is very nice, and if it was included, you can bet they'd be saying something about it.
Speaking of press releases, I'm not sure I like the marketing spin either. Eg, claiming the first commercial distro with 2.6 kernel, despite it not being available for a month, and despite the release of Mandrake 10 with 2.6 because it was the "community release". Having said that, it would be awesome if they did include it, and ported the theme to KDE for complete integration.
Possibly because there's no "We are not affiliated with Project Gutenburg 2(tm)" text on the Project Gutenburg(tm) website? Or I might just be wrong...
Very easy to use, and integrates nicely with Postfix. NOD32 is an awesome virus scanner. I just checked the list of features on amavisd and it doesn't seem to have a "clean" option, although most folks don't want it anyway... BUT it's written in Perl, so you could add it fairly easily I expect.
Except that aside from being OO, C++ has most of the pitfalls that make C a bad language for desktop programming. And I like C/C++. That said, I also like Java, and think it's pretty nice for this kind of work. Any speed issues have improved hugely with SWT, and as most folks seem to ignore, it's actually very popular in embedded and small devices. If it's used sensibly, it doesn't have to be big and slow. In fact, it has the potential to be faster with a smart JVM that can optimize effectively.
This has nothing to do with lower prices or competitive services. It's called marketing people, and it *will not* be stopped by common sense or logical thinking. Although I agree that the monopolized status quo is not ideal, the EFF just lost a bunch of credibilty by release that bollocks. What I find particularly disappointing is the emphasis on providers, companies, and resale. Clearly this wasn't designed to help the average Joe manage his own domain at a realistic price... Why should the domain name infrastructure be a market anyway? How about having it simply maintained by a non-profit orginisation and provide services to folks that need them, instead of selling vast tracts of it to the megacorps that can afford it.
So given that Project Gutenburg(tm) is actually affiliated with Project Gutenburg 2(tm), and that there's nothing on the Project Gutenburg(tm) news page about this... I'd guess the list reponse went something like this:
Michael Hart: PWNED!
Project Gutenburg(tm) volunteers: DOH!
Well, fair enough, I reckon. It's like any other trademark, and they're defending it as they ought to. You know that if they don't, some nutjobs will be selling "Mozilla" this and that on Ebay or to unsuspecting companies, ripping some poor shmucks off, and giving the Mozilla brand (I hate that word:-( ) a bad name.

Well, we *do* have tree farming already. I own shares in New Zealand planted forest, which should be ready to harvest in, oh, 30 years or so. This is on land that has already been wiped clean by previous generations, so we can leave the surviving native areas alone. I understand that similar things happen in South America too, although it seems that some folks would rather charge into the virgin rain forests instead (rat bastards, imo). Cyclical harvesting as you suggest is an interesting idea, but species that have been unmoved for thousands of years aren't real good at adapting to a 30 or even 100 year cycle.
You'll then start to see people actively looking for PC's that don't have DRM enabled.
And shortly after that you'll find that PCs that don't have DRM enabled aren't available unless you're a government agency or a corporation on contract to one.
How many computers run Phoenix or Award BIOS? How many news will have this next season? How long before AMI decides to follow suit? How much you wanna bet the next release of Windows *requires* DRM to even install it? Many geeks won't even have a choice about whether they use or deploy it.
I'm sure there will still be professional (read expensive) options without it, at least for a while, but Joe and Jane User is stuffed. I wonder if the Free BIOS projects just got the boost they were looking for...
Yes, that's why I wrote "with no Window Media plugin". It's easier to disable a plugin under Mozilla than it is under Internet Explorer, IMO.
If they want to waste 2MB of bandwidth for every vistor who's placated enough to sit through it that's up to them, but I know which sites I'll be either ad-blocking or not visiting...
Don't use Microsoft software. Really. It claims to use Windows Media 9 and some "proprietary" background downloading crap, so Mozilla with no Windows Media plugin should be a good start, along with Mozilla's AdBlock plugin just to make sure.
As opposed to Cloanto who did fuck all with it? C'mon, do you think they had anything to do with the 1.3 ROMS for gaming on the A500? It's a joke. Just another game of pass the parcel, with an OS trapped inside that is dead by the time the game is over. Like another poster said, Amiga and it's OS is dead, and it's companies like Cloanto and it's predessors that have killed it.
Open Firmware does something along these lines with Forth compiled into P-Code. The P-Code lives in ROM on the device in question, and is loaded by the BIOS at boot time. Seems to work well enough at a basic level.
It won't be God they'll have to face after this is through...

Get a trade. They can't outsource your plumbing.
Uh, I have never used Tex. And it's installed (and updated) by default by every version of Debian I've tried.
No, it's a fair question. There is still no free GPL Windows version. Possibly closest thing to an open source option is wxWidgets.

Oops. I mean, Amavisd-new. Big difference.

It's only a problem if you're not the one selling crap. Plenty of ethically bankrupt folks do quite nicely selling garbage to keep punters.

Right, but the ice will melt behind the probe as it descends. It's (probably) not going to wipe out the entire planet.
/me wonders if some ancient species once said the same about Mars...

Probably, given that it runs pretty well on near-calculator hardware. Personally, I'm waiting for a RISC-OS hand held PC ;-)
