I'm wondering what others think of the impact efforts like this may have on software development jobs in the US. Is IT still a viable field to get into and if so will it last?
IT will always be viable to those that enjoy the field. Maybe salaries will go down. So fscking what, if you enjoy what you're doing?
The fact that Free Software is gaining in popularity is a Good Thing (tm). Yes, it will lead to lower wages and perhaps fewer jobs, but society as a whole will benefit.

Slashdot is supposed to be a Linux-centric, Open Source-friendly (owned by open source development network), etc. This is all very nice, but why the fsck is it neccesary to transfer all rights to the t-shirt design to slashdot? Nice going. That's the Open Source spirit.
I never hear of anyone having their CPR number misused.
I'm danish too, and I have heard several stories about misuse of CPR numbers. It's actually too easy to misuse, since a lot of people believe that you are who you say you are, if you can give out your CPR. No picture ID required. Terrible, I know, but I have experienced this many times.
So it's not just the Americans that have a reason to be paranoid.
Well, many programmers could make a living on lower wages. Money is not everything.
And once the economy goes up, there will be jobs for those who are unemployed (not necessarily programming jobs, though). The fact that Free Software is gaining in popularity is a Good Thing (tm). Yes, it will lead to lower wages and perhaps fewer jobs, but society as a whole will benefit.
Why are you guys constantly trying to work against the hard-working software publishers at Microsoft?
Come on, guys - you know it's not right. Don't copy that floppy!

You can mod me down now, I've said my piece.
Why would you want that? Ideally, it should make ALL your appointments, and keep its own calendar of those.
Then you never have to make your own decisions ever again. Sweeeeet.
