LOL! Generally the phrase "houshold name" is used to mean something everyone knows, not to mean something known by residents of the geek household subset of the set of all households.
I would venture to guess that far more people know Linus (the thumb-sucking kid with the blanket from the Peanuts strip) than know Linux (the kludgy, open source operating system with the penguin mascot).
Google was on top in search engine software; Office-like software was free, for crissakes. Why not simply blend the two together? What would it hurt?
Oh, I think it can hurt plenty. When Google was giving away something MS also gave away, no one cared and MS hardly noticed. Now, Google wants to give away something MS sells, and I think Google is going to realize just what it means to have Microsoft take notice of them.
The exception is that Harvey Danger is one of the bigger bands to do something like this. They had a pretty big hit called "Flagpole Sitta" I'd say some 5 or 6 years ago, and they came sort of at the tail end of the radio-rock 90's one hit wonders. Think of Eve 6, Semisonic ("Closing Time"), Fastball ("The Way"), or The Verve Pipe ("Freshman") doing something like this.
Actually, Fastball had three hits: The Way, Better Than It Was, and Out of My Head.
No argument about old games not being fun. I still like Ultima II. But, being able to play old games doesn't make Linux a gaming platform. Neither does a handful of new games. For that matter, neither does sucky sound support. LOL
Oh, so you can play all the latest PC games on your Linux box? Sure, when you reboot it in Windows.
I don't think anyone would confuse Linux with a good gaming platform. That doesn't mean that some old games haven't been ported over, it just means you can't play all the latest and greatest.
Believe me, I'm not touting the Mac as a good gaming platform either, but it is at least as good as Linux.
We won WWII, but yet, much of what we fought against, seems like it is coming into being anyways.
The propaganda says WWII was a war for freedom against totalitarianism, but that's just the propaganda.
The Soviet Union was a totalitarian state and an Allied country. The U.S. used (and still uses) totalitarian methods, though we still give a wink now and then to "freedom." The British also used (and still use) totalitarian methods with a wink now and then to "freedom."
WWII was really about not letting upstarts like the Germans and Japanese horn in on the world domination of Great Britain and, later, of the U.S.
I don't use Windows, but I don't use Linux either. The reasons are pretty much the same. If Windows is the benchmark standard by which all configuration pains in the ass are measured, then Linux is at least a 3xWindows on that scale.
At least, if I were to use Windows, I could play games.
This can be seen in the supposedly negative link that critical gamers draw between Wind Waker's cel-shading, officially called "toon-shading" by Nintendo, and cartoons themselves - considered by most Americans to be a juvenile form of entertainment. Yet in Japan, anime and manga (the Japanese equivalents of cartoon shows and comic books) are regarded as legitimate art forms, and though some are designed for children, men and women of all ages enjoy these products, which lack the "kiddy" connotations they hold in the United States.
If this is true, then Anime is not one of the hottest entertainment media imported to the U.S., especially among the demographic that plays video games, it is not a forum topic on slashdot, and it does not occupy as much self space as any other single genra in the DVD section of your local BestBuy.
Why do ignorant people feel that it is necessary to write articles? All article writing does is showcase their ignorance.
...that wants to pilfer through my computer and is all put out because I use an alternative browser and he would actually have to know something about computers to be able to find anything.
After all, aren't we all interested in making homeland spying easier?
Gee, I know when I am sitting atop my house in the midst of the worlds largest sewer, with no clean water, no food, no electricity, and no prospect of getting out soon, the first think I think about is firing up my laptop and surfing the web. Of course, since I have no electricity its a little hard to actually do it. But, golly, I'm sure glad T-Mobile is thinking of me.
I'm all for free Wi-Fi, but as a T-Mobile paying subscriber, I would really like it if I had reception for my mobile phone. Think they could do anything about that while they are at it?
Well, Editor and Publisher is a pretty reputable news organization, so I would say that story is at least as true as any story you would see on any other news site. That might not be saying much, given the track-record of the news organizations, but it certainly seems like a reasonable story.
Guard units are designed to be anywhere in the world within a matter of hours.

then figure out which state national guards have experience/training with water rescue then coordinate the efforts of all of those remaining with no clear high level chain of command. This would take about 5 minutes.
***
The Army is not inept, as is the common misconception. The commanders know exactly who is trained to do what...
I knew someone on slashdot would be able to clear all the confusion up for us. I guess this explains why all those highly trained water rescue guard troops from all over the US have been airdropped into New Orleans with all their equipment.
I bet the folks in New Orleans are really glad they have got that dike all plugged up.
It's a card with an AC95 sound chip. I also tried the onboard sound (also AC95) on the Shuttle motherboard, but that didn't work either. I don't recall the exact brand of the card right now and I am 500 miles from the computer.
I tried all these on the box and could not get sound working. On the other hand, I was able to install FreeBSD 5.x, Windows XP, and eComstation 1.2 (OS2) on the machine and have the sound work fine with all of them.
I have never understood this criticism. I have never had a problem installing and using FreeBSD on any hardware I have tried it on. By contrast, I have NEVER gotten sound to work in any Linux distro on any hardware I own.
"The software tends to be ported from Linux or just generally cross-platform."
You must have something confused. I think the porting is in the other direction. However, FreeBSD can run Linux binaries.
There really is something morbidly funny about people willingly stuffing themselves into holes in the ground from which there is no possibility of escape in the event of a catastrophe. And then the catastrophe happens.
Same goes for 100+ storey buildings.
"Trying to port Linux to various portable devices is hot nowadays."
Why is this hot? Is there really a demand for installing an OS with no games on a hand held game-console?
Instead of wasting all those brain cycles porting Linux to a DX, how about the Linux boys spend some time making a consistent user interface or fixing sound.
I thought the battle cry was "Linux on the desktop" not "Linux on the handheld game console."

I would say "given the fact." My opinion of the media must be a lot lower than yours.

The same people who actually buy things advertised in spam, I suppose.

This ranks right up there with that MP calling the rest of Parliament a "conga line of suck-holes" in reference to their voting for war in Iraq.

Computers that do the bare minimum are called fingers.
I agree. I can't even remember the last time I heard about a bicycle hijacking.

Even more likely, it is becasue subways and buses are easy to get on and off and leave things (like bombs) in the rush.
If you knew who THEM was, you could arrest THEM ahead of time.
