Jon Bell writes "Derrick Hixson has submitted an amazing entry to the MacMod Mod Competition, a 'supercharged' Millennium Falcon: complete with Mac mini and iSight. It even includes front USB ports. His modguide contains complete build instructions, and plenty of pictures."

      Not entirely unrelated... For anyone who has some spare time and a TI-83 calculator, I conceived a set of functions to plot a Tie Fighter.

      In Polar mode & radians,
      r1 = tan(Theta^3)
      r2 = -tan(Theta^3)

      Window:
      ThetaMin = -10
      ThetaMax = 10
      ThetaStep = 1
      XMin = -10
      XMax = 10
      YMin = -10
      YMax = 10

      It helps to turn axes off.
      Try it out... enjoy.

      I just plotted it on my TI-89. Looks great, that's very cool. I wish my grasp of polar graphing and triganometric functions was that good :-)

    Do the editors get a sense of pride in downing other people's servers? I mean, Slashdot probably points people to places such that they get 1000x their usual visit traffic, which means that they are simply unprepared for such an unpredictable load spike.

      So what? Last I heard, the internet was a free place to roam. If you're running your website on the equivalent of a geocities server, expect to have a lot of downtime.

      I don't know the setup of that web site, but Netcraft says it is pretty much a LAMP system.

      Being free isn't an excuse to be malicious like this though, it's an abuse of freedom.

      The issue I have is that it seems the Slashdot editors are being malicious, especially when they have Coralcache and Mirrordot available to them.

      While Coral may have helped with this (mirrordot wouldn't, due to the linkages), you talk as if they're crashing things _intentionally_.

      That's certainly not the case. In addition there's no real way to externally test how a site will do before it goes up on the main page, all you have available is a trial by fire.

      Sure, you could ask the admins, but 99% will say "Hell yeah, my box is kickass and so's my programming, I'll have no problem" while they actually have no idea how bad it could get.

    You are right. Damn them for using a Mac for this, despite Netcraft saying the server has been Linux/Apache. That'll teach them, they should have been using Windows XP running IIS.

      Your observation is correct, but the reason you speculate is probably not. The primary reason sites with plent of pictures get slashdotted easily is because pictures consume quite a lot more bandwidth than text.

      Have you considered breaking up the page into smaller segments? That page has 1.2Mb of pictures! Chopping the page into 5 or 6 smaller sections will even out the load on the server. Rebooting won't help.

      Very true... However, they are developers.

      This is a production model mac mini (at least nothing in the article suggests otherwise), so I was assuming no NDA was involved as it was likely a retail purchase.

    So a couple of guys cut up and drilled some holes in a large Star Wars toy, and just placed a Mac Mini and iSight inside? Does it do anything...else? Flashing lights? Hover? Anything? It doesn't seem impressive at all...

      not so much impressive as it is intriguing. Certainly anyone could have done such a thing with a little time and a couple bucks (and perhaps a certain disregard for the wellbeing of a mac mini), but the point is they thought of it and they followed through and came up with something interesting. Certainly future versions or copy cats could be much more involved. For instance: I'd love to see a flexible screen in place of the rear decal that could show the movie or something. Either way, while not particularly impressive, it certainly is a little fun.

      Actually, the 12 parsecs can make sense if you all really think about it. He's suggesting that his jump drive is so good that he only has to travel 12 parsecs between jumps to make the trip. Everyone else has to make more jumps and travel a longer distance.

      All these editor jokes are amusing, but I don't see why a bunch of computer geeks haven't figured it out yet. THERE ARE NO EDITORS.

      There is a script, it deploys the stories at particular intervals. Sometimes the editors do it themselves but all these "dead time" stories are deployed by a script, so the editor probably either doesn't select them, or selects 20 in advance to be dispensed slowly over a give time period.

      Of course all the errors are going to slip through when you are mass-approving stories. Just remember subscribers... you are paying for this.

    Has anyone done a study on how long it takes a site to be /.ed once it makes the front page? Another thought: In the WAT (War Against Terror) just put the terrorist web sites on the /. front page every couple of days and watch them go down.

      I actually submitted a simillar idea to Ask Slashdot back in September of 2001, suggesting that if we could get a hold of terrorist email addresses, we could spam them into unusability. Fortunatly, it was never posted, because there are some obvious flaws with that plan.

      You're idea here is better, but it would probably still fall into the same pitfalls; who tracks down terrorist websites, who determines which sites are terrorist sites, and how do we make this effect last longer than a couple of days? It might be easier to determine with webpages, but it's going to be harder to keep it up, and I don't know whether we would really be accomplishing anything.

      Still, terrorizing terrorist webpages would be a damn good time . . . .

    I'm always a bit disappointed by these articles on case mods. I guess it's art, but it'd be cooler if the case were mobile...

    This guy has taken a Mac Mini, an iSight, and a cheap interface board (called bTop) to create a programmable autonomous robot.

    Somewhere out there I think there's a video of George's case mod chasing him around the room.
