Kenneth Cowpland was the ultimate death of that company. They were following the embrace, extend and extinguish philosopy, unfortunately they never realized that it was the competition that they were supposed to extinguish, and not themselves.
They killed WordPerfect. They let the entire graphics line die. They nearly killed the company when they put a big stake in developing a home computer which ran Java natively. They seemed to always have their heads too far into the future while their products stayed too far in the past.
In short, it is absolutely amazing they stayed alive this long, depite complete and utter mismanagement. Good riddance to bad garbage.

Yes, Bell has removed their caps, but from my experience, they are very hard to deal with, do not provide a full service (port filtering) and tech support is a bitch. My Dad knows more about the computers than their level one techs. We switched him to a local provider ASAP.

My local provider really doesn't care what I do with my service, as long as I don't bother him about supporting it. No filters, no port blocking, I can serve my own webpages, e-mail, whatever I want to do, as long as I don't cause them grief. I've had the service for three years now, and I only talked to them once, and that was when Bell fscked with the MTU sizes and cut a bunch of us off.

It boggles the mind. Make baseless allegations, sell protection, lose in court, go to step 1.

And if the kernel guys remove all the offending code, and therefore the issues, then SCO will have to come up with some other way to make money. I just hope they're not reading my comments, and turn it back into an IP issue.

There could have been several resolutions to this case, but SCO has essentially blockaded all avenues of compromise. I could see them saying that the kernel hackers can't recode the kernel because they have seen SCO's version and will obviously infringe on it.

Any time SCO wants money, it just sues or makes everyone buy a license in perpetua.

The biggest problem with the Kernel guys redoing it, is now they can be considered 'tainted'. Hell, because of the widespread distribution of the kernel source, everyone can be considered tainted. It is now impossible to do a clean-room implementation. The innovations which SCO own (not created) could be considered inspiration to the new implementation, and therefore any new implementation would be considered a derivative work.
We have to shoot everyone and start over to have a true untainted implementation.

    Or we could bury SCO.
