Granted, MySQL is popular; just about every cheapo hosting service has installed it and offers it up as part of their base level $20.00 a month hosting pack.
$20 a month?!? Who are you overpaying for hosting?
I laugh anytime someone tells me that they can enforce data integrity from their application layer instead of using foreign keys (usually while trying to clean up their mess of a data set so the data itself can be trusted).
My parents used to have AOL, and then I convinced them to switch to Comcast Cable Internet. They still have AOL, however, because it broke IE when I tried to uninstall it, and my dad won't use Mozilla.
2) People who use AOL don't really care how they get their mail as long as the nice man says "You've got mail!" and reminds them of that charming Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks flick
Sure, the physical design is important to get ultimate efficiency, but a similar system could provide most of the energy for other installations. All you really need is a southern exposure and room for a tank of hydrogen and a fuel cell. Almost every house in my area has these. For the third time, I'd love to have one of those systems.
Computers, too, were once extremely expensive, and I'm sure people said they would never take off. In fact, Babbage once said there was only a market for five computers in the world.
The more people who buy one, the lower the price. I'm extrememly interested in this, because it means I don't have to give all my money to some massive corporation every year. Just once, and then they can take their fossil fuels and shove them up their collective ass.
The solar power makes the hydrogen that the house runs on. And to think that they haven't thought out problems like explosions or cloudy days is idiotic. I'd love to live in one of these houses and never pay anyone for fuel or electricity again.
They will reach those speeds when people realize that they and their neighbors can create a company to provide them with exactly the service they want. Community based FTTH is providing 10Mbit connections to thousands of locations for $15-$30 per month. With a static IP.
Fuck the corporate world. Communal internet is the future.
People will do stupid shit because it looks cool. Why? Cause it looks cool. It is our jobs as computer 'guys' to know how to fix it immediately. And if that means we have to uninstall it, we're not trying hard enough.
From what the admins at my alma mater were whining, the big issue (for them at least) is that the dorms were eating up Internet bandwidth for the legit uses of the network. But instead of seperating the dorm network from the lab/library/staff network, they clamped down on everyone, putting up bandwidth limits.
Seperate the pipelines, and you have the nasty bits of campus networks (filesharing) seperate from the important stuff. If a kid really needs to do work, they can go to the lab.
Why move a ship when all you really have to move is space itself? Der. Just shrink space in front of the ship and expand it behind. Nobody breaks any speed limits because the ship never actually moves.
Now, do you do your hair / beard / moustache yourself? Cook from real raw materials (as opposed to fastfood, restaurants, or cook using almost ready ingredients)? Sew your own suits? And so on.
Hair? No. My mom's a hairdresser, and I get free haircuts from her. Beard? I shave every day. Cook from raw materials? I love doing that. So much more flavorful.
I guess I'm just shocked at the fact that you aren't curious. Maybe it's me, but I like to noodle with things and see how they work, and you can't do that in newer cars without frying the whole thing.
It's striking a balance. I got a Power Mac G4 as a graduation gift and it lasted me through college. I didn't use the firewire at first. I didn't use the airport card slot at first. I didn't use the PCI slots at first. But when I did need them, they were really handy. It's been four years and I still have it, though I'm definitely going to pick up one of these new 15" Powerbooks, and maybe a 12" for the little woman. And I won't have a problem taking out a loan for them, because I know they'll last for 60 months.
Shelling out 3 grand for a peecee is idiotic because you'll just get a new one once it breaks, but I'm pretty sure my $1500 Power Mac will be running when my kids are graduating high school.

No. They were shouting down the conservative speakers because you're all so wrong it makes our brains hurt. For the love of God, please stop posting.
No fees charged for using any ATM, and any fees charged by the owners of the ATM are refunded to me at the end of the month.
I love my credit union.
Feel free to .sig it. *checks off 'get sigged on /.' on To-Do list*
If a site is Slashdotted before you have a chance to see it, does it even exist?

Yeah! That's pretty funny! Ha ha ha ha... huh?

I'm so ashamed.
1) Geeks who know WTF IMAP is don't use AOL
2) People who use AOL don't really care how they get their mail as long as the nice man says "You've got mail!" and reminds them of that charming Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks flick
That's like using a Mac truck to drive to the grocery store and back.
New for 2004, the Mac Truck! Marvel at the Aqua interface. Thrill at the 64 bit engine!

I just started a job with a state agency doing web dev (Java and Coldfusion) $43K + benefits + job security. Oh, and a general pay increase in July.
Government jobs rule.

Wow. Did you stay in East Halls at PSU, too?
Come now. Let's not disparage monkeys by saying they'd have relations with the MPAA.
Tell me about it. My fiance wants to throw out my Lucy and Desi Apple poster. Girls are weird.

I find it amazing that anyone who owns something as complex as a car or a computer can not care how it works.
Do you even change your own oil?
