Quite frankly, sir, you are ill-informed, since these thermal pastes do far more than your standard stuff you get from AMD or Intel (I'm not sure if Intel provides a thermal pad, I'm sure they do, but I've never bought an Intel processor), or buy on the internet that doesn't contain silver.

Here are some links for you to check out to see just how much of a difference these tubes make:

Mikhailtech review, EXHardware review/comparison of pastes, Overclockers Club review/comparison, ClubOC review/comparison.

There are many more reviews and comparisons. I chose to do a Google search for 'review "arctic silver 3"' and those were pretty much the first hits I got. In an overclocked system where stability and cooling is important, these pastes could make all the difference. In a standard system, these help prolong the life of the computer's parts.

Oh, and before I forget, the links I just posted more or less compare Arctic Silver stuff with either other Arctic Silver products, or competing products. If you want to see just how much of a difference these compounds can make from the regular thermal pads or thermal compound that uses silicone, Check this out. That's a whopping 10 degrees celsius difference the Arctic Silver has on full load compared to a standard thermal pad, and 5 degrees difference from standard thermal compound w/silicone.

I personally use AS3, and so does my father. With this paste I can safely overclock my Athlon 2000+ to an Athlon 2600+. Not that I do, mind you, because even though I can, I'd rather know that my system is well cooled, rather than adequately.

While Dupont may not have been the initiator of Marijuana prohibition and scare tactics, it certainly didn't help that he adopted such ideas and policies in order to protect his industry. The outlawing of cannabis was a side-effect to what Dupont wanted. Hemp (And thus cannabis as well, since it still contains THC) was made illegal because it was associated with the "evil" that is marijuana.

Drug laws were birthed and fostered by racism, and they're perpetuated by ignorance and a stubborn "For your own good" attitude.

Feel free to mod off-topic, but one could easily say that SCO is doing the exact same thing. They want to protect their business and the elimination/minimization of Open Source is their primary concern, rather than competing in an honest fashion. If people don't want to pay for your crap, they don't (Or at least shouldn't) have to, it's as simple as that.

Thanks for the post, you have no idea how much I appreciate the input. Yes, this mobo utilizes a Realtek ALC650 codec, and does not include the APU that the MCP-T southbridge provides. However, on my Athlon XP 2000+, the burden seems to be quite miniscule, and I don't notice a performance hit in any games. I actually came across a comparison of the nforce and SBLive CPU usage, and it found that the nforce uses less CPU. I thought it was pretty shocking, even though it may have just been because of faulty drivers from Creative.

I think that I'll go ahead and get to finalizing my move over to the onboard audio today. All I have to do is figure out how I'm going to go about getting my Linux audio to work via software mixing. I guess that later on today I may end up removing the SBLive card completely from my case.

P.S. -- Not only am I using an old SB Live!, but it's a Value..

Alright, here's the deal guys... there are folders on KDE's FTP that have both the sources as well as contributed packages for various distributions, including big-name ones like Mandrake, Slackware, or SuSE. Download the packages for your distro, learn how to upgrade packages with your package manager, and upgrade away.

Honestly, it's not that hard. I used KDE 3.1 betas for a long time in Slackware before it was officially released and the next version of Slackware rolled around. If you need help figuring out how to upgrade the packages in your distro, try asking people on IRC, mailing lists, or forums.

GUI tools that would do things like Windows Update does are amazingly difficult to bring to life. As far as I know, if you're not afraid to do at least a little bit of CLI work, Mandrake's urpmi can easily be adapted to use Cooker repositories (Cooker is the development branch). Fedora Core comes with yum which can use multiple repositories (Maybe something similar to Rawhide?) that are not too hard to find. SuSE, well, I dunno about SuSE, to be honest with you. I certainly don't think that SuSE users should use anything but YaST2, since YaST never has liked other programs or people managing what it traditionally takes care of.

P.S. -- If you really want to keep up to date, sources are the best thing since sliced bread. Don't use a binary distribution, or learn the gritty details of how the system you're using works and how to keep your custom packages from breaking the whole thing down.

For about a week now I've been trying to figure out if it's worth my time to switch completely from my SoundBlaster Live! Value to my on-board nforce2 audio. I have a Shuttle AN35N-Ultra mobo that has an MCP southbridge, not an MCP-T, so I gather that it means I can't have all the fancy schmancy add-ons that the Soundstorm technology uses (Tom's Hardware notes that "you have to do without Dolby digital sound and FireWire" due to using the MCP chip). I don't know if it's an actual improvement or not, but it feels like my onboard audio sounds better than the SB card, and it apparently takes a bit less CPU. For the most part I think that the switch looks like a real good idea, but what's keeping me from the switch is a second opinion. Well, that and the whole task of setting up software mixing in my Gentoo setup so that I don't notice the lack of hardware mixing support in the drivers.

Think you could give me an idea as to whether or not the switch is worthwhile?

If you're going for sounding like you're not biased, try to lay off a percentage mark so high. Everyone I know can run Steam fine (Although one of my friends is stuck on AOL, too bad) and there havn't been any problems for me except for when Steam came out of beta, for about a month there was a problem where on the first load it would cause quite a lot of HD activity. That's been fixed now and it works quite flawlessly, and it's a hell of a lot better than how it used to be, for sure, when it comes to the in-game menus (For configuration). Not only does it have an IM network that is simple and functional, but it has a nice server browser as well as the ability to be able to still see the game being played if you need to adjust your controls or something because a friend changed them last time you let them play. Maybe I'm just some crazy bastard, but Steam has been a hit with me ever since about a month or so before it went out of public beta. Ditto for CS 1.6. Seriously, I used to run Steam on an AMD K6-III/450 with 512MB of SDRAM. It's not that bad, and it's certainly not an issue at all on my newer box.
