  1. Re:Crap utter crap. on Xandros version 2 · · Score: 0, Troll

Get a clue, looking like Windows does not equate to being Windows. If Linux is to become a viable solution for the mainstream desktop, which is what Xandros is aiming for (And not in any way prohibiting you from using whatever Linux variation you desire, from Gentoo to Debian to Slackware), it needs to emulate a familiar look at feel as well as adopt a more user-frienly interface that will enable newcomers and less-experienced computer users to have an alternative to Windows on the desktop (Phew, was that a run-on sentence or what?). And why on earth did you decide to use Linux instead of Windows because of how it looked?

Or maybe you should move to FreeBSD or one of the other *BSDs before you somehow get infected by this new virus of user-friendly Linux advancements.

I don't know why on earth I decided to feed such an obvious troll, but oh well.

Riiiiight... Winamp has been good about not leaving crap behind. Since Winamp 3 (Maybe before, but I can't remember right now) you are even prompted if you would like to delete the entire Winamp folder, downloaded plugins, skins and all. As far as the registry goes, I've never had any issue juggling Winamp 2, 3, and 5 installations.

Any idea on how well the development versions tend to function? I like using those whenever possible. Hehe.

Then again, maybe it runs in Wine... ;)

Why would you want to use your audio player to encode, and encode to mp3s at that? Get the right tool for the job, CDex to make ogg, flac, or even mp3 if you so desire. And you can go to RareWares to obtain updated dll files for encoding via CDex. I don't see any problem with a Pro version so long as necessary functionality from a media player isn't taken out.

As far as I know, there's no native support for freeform skinning in XMMS, which is one of the main features of WinAMP 5 (Well, actually, it simply adopted that feature from WinAMP 3, but they run much better in the new version. Faster, less resource intensive. I can attest to this by experience from early on, since superprealphaleetness). I think you can get freeform skin support via plug-ins, but it's just not the same thing. :) Plus, it's just cool to find things that you can run in Wine. At least it is to my geeky self.

*shrug* Of course you are correct that Debian and LFS are just as customizable in choosing what you install, but Debian only offers what's in the apt repositories unless you know how to compile/install/manage your own packages. LFS is like Gentoo in that it's great and source-based, but really, if someone's turned off by Gentoo's source-based system, they're really going to hate doing things by hand in LFS. I don't know, the USE flags never really posed much of a hurdle for me, but then again, I've been using computers for 8+ years now. Things are getting easier though, and the Gentoo community is quickly moving to accommodate newcomers with little experience. There's already one or two USE flag editor programs in the portage tree that make it a little easier to manage the whole thing.

Use the experimental x86 livecds with GNOME, KDE, and fluxbox, and you can have a complete desktop while installing Gentoo. On modern machines the process only takes about a day or two to get into your own system if you don't want to just stay on the livecd until you have your favorite desktop installed (KDE will take quite some time longer). Besides, USE flags are not the only thing that enables customization in Gentoo. Pick and choosing what you install is real nice, even if it's not as fine-tuned as making use of the, well, USE flags. :)
