Yeah, but what made me mad was Hollywood's interference with the script. They clearly had to have their happy ending since it sells better. The guy comes back from the dead?!? Come on.:-P
The quality isn't ideal (the transfer is for 1 single-layer DVD per film) but it's widescreen, better than VHS and the best version of the originals we're likely to get.
That was exactly my point of starting this project. The Definitive Collection Laserdiscs were THX mastered in widescreen format. Audio is a Dolby Mix (pre 5.1 days). The movies were on 5 disc sides and the sixth had supplemental material. There were also a few commentary tracks at various points of the movies.
I was able to capture 3 sides on a single layer DVD, so my copies thus far are on 2 discs (about 80 mins fits on one disc). I'd rather have higher quality on 2 discs than a compressed copy on one (I tried that too and didn't really like the result). I figure that I can abuse the DVD copies and always try to make another set from the Laserdiscs later as technology improves (i.e. dual layer burners, blu-ray, etc.)
Funny that you mention ripping. I knew that he'd never release the original movies on DVD, so I've been copying my "Definitive Collection" laserdiscs onto DVD via my PC. The end result is pretty good. Very little loss of quality. I'm sure it would look better if I had a nicer LD player for output. Too bad Lucas has to shove the crappy special editions out to the public. Sad to see a once celebrated franchise become the biggest joke out there (well, maybe a close second to the Matrix sequels).:-)
