  1. Darwin Awards Submission... on Inventor Building Rocket In Backyard · · Score: 1

I think next year we'll be seeing this posted on the Darwin awards for sure. I remeber hearing something a few months back about a guy who built himself a rocket car. He found an old rocket in a junk yard, strapped it to his car and decided to take a spin. Unfortunately he neglected to figure out a way to make it stop. He went to a field, started his car andf then the engine. He was doing beautifully until he smashed into the side of a mountain.

What is this story going to be? The rocket blows up on the launch pad? He hurdles into a building? Or comes crashing down into the ground? Or will he actually make it into space and realize that he forgot to find a way to get back?

I think we should watch this one very closely...

It ways more than 5 full tower cases but can still print whatever font you want. It also shakes whatever table you have it on like crazy and makes a hell of alot of noise.

Aside from the obvious plot of the entire movie being predictable. The "Dreds" (bad guys) used fighting styles similar to Tie fighters. And most of the battle scences could be seen in every Star Trek movie.
Aside from that the only real prob I had was a scene in the beginning when they were trying to escape the starbase. Thier ship had to smash into some doors and blast its way into outerspace. Only prob the cheap glass between them and space was cracked...and breaking fast. So what do they do? Take a deap breath and grab a fire extinquisher. The guy proceeds to break the glass and use the extinquisher to propel themselves to a nearby ship. Except for a few cuts from a previous battle, both are fine.
Anyone see that scene in Mission to Mars when he took off his helmet and his head froze up in less than a second? Wouldn't something similar happen? Or was it possible that they were just in a part of space that was normal ambiant temperature?

Well it was a kids film, I don't expect much from it.

  17. Noise - It tells you it works! on Computers And The Noise They Make · · Score: 1

How can you not have a computer that makes noise? I get worried sick when I don't hear the hum of my PC fans.
I woke up one night about 4 in the morning to the sound of silence, which was odd cause my computer is on 24/7. I looked at my alarm clock and it was stil working, so we had power. I jumped out of bed to discover that the lights on my case were off. I quickly pressed the power button, but to my surprise nothing happened. I dismanteld the computer and detacted the power supply and tested it by itself. Nothing happened. I quickly grabbed a backup power supply, rigged it to the side of the case, attached the cables to the mobo, and turned it on.
I great sigh of relief when the leds came back on and the system booted normally. Thankfully there was no damage. Except one fried power supply, I think the PC fan stopped and the power supply over heated.

Sounds tell you what is wrong with a computer. Look at the sounds your PC speaker makes when it boots up. The sound of your CDROM spinning up (which tells you when you can finally access it).
You can't just have a computer that generates no sound, you'd never know wtf it is doing.

  20. Side Note... on New Power-Sipping Chips From Intel · · Score: 2

Putting the Intel VS Transmeta thing aside. Look at what is really being accomplished here. More processors on the market that use less power will help the portable PC market grow. Right now the processors in Palm Pilots and other handhelds aren't so good. New processors like this will soon change all that. (I know what most ppl are thinking: 'What do I need with 500Mhz on my palm pilot?' But eventually, one day, notebooks will be as small as the palm pilot, but as interactive and useful as your home PC. This is making it one step closer).
I think alot of the negative comments that seem to be posted here are because of all the AMD vs Intel junk that has been going on for awhile and now they seem to think Transmeta is going to recieve the same type of match.
But look at what it did to AMD? They were very much a struggling company until the K7's hit the market. Transmeta is the same way, maybe Intel coming into the light will force newer and better chips from both sides.

And on a personal note, I would love to see Intel crash and burn and AMD take over in the processor market. But Intel has been around for such along time I doubt it is going to happen.
