Even if they do send it back to HQ, they will be able to say "someone with a BrandName motherboard with the serial number ABC123XYZ has been using Skype"... and?...
I just don't see the big deal.
Anyway, my guess would be that they are using it - along with some other info - for generating some kind of unique key for the encrypted communication.
