Well, it is different administration and President, so yeah, it is different.
Obama itself set catching or killing Bin Laden as an aim. Bush just ran things like "OMG everyone around us a terrorist, kill everyone, bomb everyone". I know, liberals have hard time to accept that Obama can be different from Bush, but in this case it seems so.
Fact that weapon making/copyright/etc. lobbies gets their stuff done whatever administration is in power is bigger problem in political thinking overall. You can't change it overnight with electing new, promising president. He can't change this system on his own - and he even don't know if voters wants that (because high ethics has never been and election issue).
Well, of course there is no worth to mention that GNOME 3 has "fall back mode" aka....old classic GNOME Panel! Now ported, cleaned and have it's configuration simplified. Yes, applets will have to be ported. Yes, there will be some small changes or need to rewrite some code. But guess what - GNOME project so far have indicated that they will support GNOME Panel (aka GNOME 2 mode) as long as it will be necessary.
This is really long stretch and will require recording of actual call and other details. You can fake voice message, but faking actual call is very difficult, never mind Hollywood showing simple voice changers as hot cakes available for everyone. Interesting legal theory though. As usual, needs facts and sound arguments why they are binding together.
I know. I just point out that population doesn't care about this angle because they have never thought about it. All they care - can this law - extension of postmortem copyright term - can land me in shit *right* now or can't? If can't, I don't care.
More or less, they don't care about the future. It is reason of full blown survivalism going around in capitalism world. Everyone wants to *survive*. Copyright simply doesn't come into their picture. They don't grasp long term implications of this. And probably never will.
Problem with all these politics are that population doesn't actually care about copyright law. Probability of getting hit by lawsuit (especially in Europe) is still very low, as it will cost much more than in US to sue Common Joe for copyright infringement (looser pays all lawyering fees and no one can promise victory for recording company in the court). So people seed, leech, download, install and give a shit about that. In fact, this is not only about copyright law, but that's discussion for another day.
In nutshell, deputies won't care if they electors won't care. Everyone sees copyright as necessary evil formality but nothing more. So 70 or 95 - they don't see the difference.
This is common criticism of capitalism - people stop care about things because they are overwhelmed by their own survival (and instincts which drive it).
Well, defending != mass killing, which was in fact promised and promoted from Arab leaders. If you think that Arabs are brutal sometimes these days, you should understand how they dealt with such situations in 49. I don't think US and Jews were smart enough about engaging Arabs in such way, but more or less they didn't plan to ignore Palestinians. However, Palestinians and Arabs planned to deal with this problem old school way - devastatingly destroying their enemy. Who cares about UN or aftermath of WWII, heck, most of the Arabs where in line with Hitler because of same old antisemitism. I'm ready to bet that most Arab states around Israel saw this as perfect case to finish what their German colleague have started.
So, in nutshell, Jews maybe guilty of many things, but Palestinians have landed themselves in this situation again, and again, and again, and again - mostly letting radicals dictate how they should fight for their freedom. Unfortunately, Jews have started to do the same, voting radicals in office to screw the country and possible peace process.
As someone said - we need *real* peace leaders at both sides. Because leaders call the shots and they can swing popular opinion about what must be done.
There is no way to describe how I love this high-shelves self-rightiousness! You sleep very well at nights, don't you?
Not every situation is alike. Iraq was clearly a mistake. This is entirerly different situation now. I am actually surprised to UN finally act united (even those countries who abstained did it for totally different reasons), only to snatch bloody victory from Gadaffi's hands.
War is bad any time it happens. But sometimes you have to do the fighting to have peace. At least Lybians can't say that they didn't try for that.
I'm usually against conspiracy theories (real life is full of surprises), but such harsh judgment also make me think that prosecution and judge are huge friends with Goldman (it is just a theory, of course - it could be prosecution which feels all warm inside thinking about Goldman and incompetent judge). I mean, stealing code which is not your own is bad, but 8 years?! People with more far reaching consequences don't get even 4! Ok, I know, US is strange place for justice, but come on!
As side note, I think stock market have gone very sideways. If there is any sanity, it will soon leave that chocked up rat race.
Well, it can be called ar DDoS or carpet bombing...Whatever. It is the same strategy pro-softpatents lobbyists tried several years ago with software patent "harmonization" in ES. They are still trying to push it, but with much less success than before.
What can I say - journalists just should do their work, bring these things to the front and then we can hope that they will back off.
Thanks to everyone - FSF and EFF especially - who tries to stop these efforts.
First of all, let's lay down our definitions of "evil" here. For me, Microsoft is evil due of *illegal* practices of abusing monopoly status, such as: 1) deals with OEM which includes clauses of avoiding of offering competition products; 2) bribing local politicians and using money for PR companies to curve public opinion about alternatives to Microsoft software; 3) encouraging lock-in in their products, indentionally or unidentionally, trough poor product quality; 4) etc.
Apple maybe is guilty of several things, but those are not coming even close to this definition. Yeah, they always preferred controlled enviroment - therefore it is not legal to buy & use OS X for your home-made Intel, there is no easy way to access iPad/iPhone/IPod Touch from other OSes than Windows or OS X, etc. But still choice is there.
So are they annoying and controlling? Yes. Are they evil? Not even close. I don't use their products - because I can't afford them and because I value my freedom too much. But still they don't lie about it when they sell or advertise it. They don't promise freedom, they promise certain ease of using their products.
What's aim of this article? What's reasoning to begin with? Right, ARM is next hot cake, and Microsoft have no presence whatsoever on this platform. Therefore it must fall back to PR companies which tries to push articles like "Waiting for Windows 8", "ARM will be supported in Windows 8", "Hey, did you know Windows 8 is next best thing?" on portals like Slashdot.
Of course manufacturers will try to support any major operational system in the market - that includes Windows - if suddenly full blown Windows on ARM becomes reality. So this is worth separate article on Slashdot?
1. Wait a minute - so it is wrong to try different just because your subconscious reacts angrily to changes that will require to retrain your motor skills?:) To be more serious, well, it's their decision. I'm fine with this decision and will try GNOME 3 out when it will be finally released. No one forces you to migrate or use it. I don't need minimize so frequently, and I can try to live without it. If you can't - fine, but don't call me idiot just because I and GNOME 3 devs want to try new paradigm;
2. You haven't done proper user support, have you? Then you would know that it is very hard to understand when pressing button will maximize and when restore it to "normal" version. this concept has been always broken, I just don't fully agree with GNOME 3 devs that removing it would solve a problem. But it should be changed;
3. Again, please, don't call me or them idiots or retarded just because you don't agree with us. It is very simple thing to ask, no?
4. It works like Windows, looks like Windows, but it is not definite desktop OS per se. Because no one is. And please, tell me it's a joke that Windows 7 can be used as touchscreen OS. Because it simply can't.
I would also like to remind you that similar anger outbursts where registered here, on Slashdot just after Canonical moved buttons from left to right. I won't dive into details why such angry flame wars shows up after such decisions, but something can be said - my truth is mine, and your truth is yours.
1. CORBA wasn't dead when GNOME 2 was created, t.i. in 2001. It died few years later, sure, but guess what, D-BUS was created and CORBA was deprecatated; 2. What's wrong with XML? 3. You really don't know what GConf is, do you? It is nothing like binary spagetti of Windows registry. In fact, it's the best thing GNOME has delivered and afaik dconf - next generation of XML registry - will be adapted by KDE too. Now you can start running and screaming; 4. C# and Mono - and while you refuse to embrase it, huge part of desktop apps are written in C#. Good luck being pure. Also I would like to note that Tomboy is only app written in Mono which is in official GNOME stack. The rest is C and Python; 5. Don't wanna clarify?
As traditionally, for such controversial topic no one reads TFA, but try to make jokes for mod points sake, try to be insightful calling author of this blog article drug user, etc. etc. Geeks, you are so pathetic and predictable sometimes.
Minimize - in GNOME 3 default shell is GNOME Shell, and in this shell there is nowhere to minimize to. You switch between windows using either Alt+Tab, or Expose, which can be reached just moving cursor to left top corner.
Maximize is more tricky, but more or less I always have wanted that confusing button gone. Nevermind that it toogles between maximize/restore functionality, double click on title of the window will do much better.
These changes are risky, but I would definitely not call them rushed or stupid or "just because authors want it that way". Keep in mind, that those are hired professionals which have brought us GNOME 2.x series.
Before criticizing understand that GNOME 3 and Unity (which also have got lot of "love" from Slashdot flamers) is created with future controls in mind - multitouch, gestures, etc. (I won't discuss here if their ways are right ones). If someone wants classic desktop back - there are choices out there, starting with Xfce, trying to fork GNOME 2.32 in some kind of "GNOME Classic" project which supports gnome-panel and other stuff.
Maybe they will ask Google for people who have searched for certain terms, code names, utt.? What's next, going after people who criticize this witch hunt from Sony?
It is funny that some lawyer drones are capable to destroy everything company tried hard to build. It is time to require lawyers to have not only knowledge of law, but also understanding of common sense and intelligence. Otherwise modern society will slowly kill itself with such attitude.
Maybe then buy printer which actually works with your actual systems? It is not that it is 2000 all over again - Linux printing (and CUPS in general, thanks to Apple and OS X) support is quite high.
Please, clarify. I understood that desktops was still Windows, but they used open source apps - Mozilla, OpenOffice.org suites, etc. Where's printer and scanner drivers comes in?
I call it 'paradox of power'. Power is attracted by people, who wants power and nothing more. In fact, they want huge control over their lifes - and they are pushed by basic survival instinct. Problem with instincts that they are very primeval and without additional dose of intelligence will fail it's owner.
So, in traditional corporation, you can climb to the top 1) using your brain and charisma or 2) using your survival skill, which borders with sociopathy. So you can work hard and try to present your results in positive light *or* you can lie and cheat and walk over dead bodies of units/other people careers.
Problem with this setting is when true sociopath got their foot in this game, they can cause serious destruction and mayhem - and still get on the top. That's how they do - they play on other weaknesses, secrets, have no remorse or even sense of accomplishment. They just do things for doing sake. For aim sake. Because underneath it is all about survival. They will do absolutely anything - just to survive. I call it a survive instinct glitch.
If corporation have been long enough in existence, top of it will consist of such "survivors", which will cheer on such guys like Elop. That's why they recognize their kind and promote it, thinking that it will cause survival of their company too.
As for any paradox, it barely makes a sense. But that's how human mind is built.
I see it as nice example why there won't be dominating form of computing and communication. People are different and have different needs of communication. 'Dumphones' works for most of people, I have smart one because I *want* to do something additionally - like browsing web or reading emails. It is free market, consumer choice based at it's best. My last dumphone - Benq produced Siemens S75 - was with me for 4 years. It was abused, it fell, were beaten uncounted times. But it still worked. I had to retire it after all power supply cables were gone and as Siemens phone line (even as Benq) were long gone, I made a move to Android. And even there, most important factors why I enjoy my HTC Wildfire it's superb integration of phone basic functionality - calls and messages within Sense/Android UI.
Google Nexus S, developed by Samsung? I have heard lot of good things about it.
Android is quite open - yes, phone vendors and Google still ship numbers of closed apps with standard platform, but rest of it is documented and open sourced quite nicely. Also I usually buy phones not from mobile networks, so I avoid all lockdowns and such stuff.
I have HTC Wildfire, and it is niffy, good looking thing. I had reserved thoughts about Android before but now I think Google knows how to do that.
Still looking forward to MeeGo as alternative, 'classic style' mobile Linux platform. Loved Moblin 2 demos.
Information can't be stopped. If it's out, it is useless try to stop to spread it legally. If you know censors or TPTB, then it's another talk.

What is more paradoxical that it is possible that he could survive only in his car, allowing water to carry it. If he steps outside, he dies for sure.
And when you see some poor suckers trying to escape that wave with cars - and they fail...
I'm trying to say myself that there is nothing I can or could do. But I wish I could...
Wave moves slowly and silently inland, and carries parts of houses in full flames (!!!). This is insane.
