I agree with some of your points, but what is an "open source mesh broadcast tower"? Do you mean a tower that has a mesh node on it that is controlled by open source software? If that is all you are looking for, you could probably build it with existing wifi equipment and a tower like hams use for HF antennas, the trick is convincing all of your neighbors to get similar systems so that your node has other nodes to be a mesh with. Plus someone still has to have an internet connection with this setup, but you could build it if you really want it. It would probably cost the equivalent of 5 years of DSL service for one node especially if you have to get a tower over 50'.

I agree with your concern. If we assume an S/N ratio of 20db (about 3 S units on my HF rig or noise at S6 and signal at S9 which I consider a good copy) then Shannon-Hartley's theorem says that they will get at best 333kbps. I used the example calculation #1 at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon%E2%80%93Hartley_theorem and just substituted 50kc for 4kc to get this.

    Anyone disagree?

I don't agree that C is hard to use, it's just more time consuming to do things because it doesn't include built in libraries for everything and you have to manage memory yourself (also Microsoft can't create decent C APIs because they're all a bunch of VB flunkies at heart). However once you get used to those caveats you can write anything from an OS kernel to Web apps. I do wish C had complex number and bit variables though (C99 has the former and I guess the boolean type is close to a bit from the programmers perspective. However C99 support is kinda sketchy as far as compilers are concerned ).

I hate any language that places significance on whitespace (if they would have just put a complex type into C we could have killed fortran before the 77 version and this Python shit wouldn't be here but alas).

I also only find Monty Python mildly amusing at best (the jokes are funny but go on for too long and I'm growing tired of all the idiots that quote it all the time).

Fact - C is the best language of all time. If your program is more than a few lines of bash it should be in C. Ritchie is God (yeah that's right, capital 'G') and Stroustrup should be shot for sacrilege!

To mod troll or funny; that is the question. The thing is I'm not kidding.

My experiences with VIA are similar.

I had a VIA 533 MHz C3 based micro-itx board and I hated it. It performed about as well as a P2 at 350MHz at best. Things that I could do on my Athlon 64 3500 in 2 hours took 12-13 on the VIA system (converting downloaded AVI files to DVDs for my folks who didn't have a DVD player that could do anything but DVDs) so instead of doing 2-3 movies at night after work, I would have to leave it run overnight and hope that it didn't encounter any errors in the process. The graphics card did not really work under BSD and I'm told that the Linux support was bad too (don't use it). Their bragged about hardware accelerated crypto was also not supported by anything so it was effectively useless. I also couldn't get Windows XP to work with it (it installed but crashed all the time) so I ended up with a machine that dual-booted Win2k and FreeBSD 6.0 without X windows. I thought about building a car PC, but I ended up selling the system instead.

I don't plan on buying VIA products again
