No. Might as well have them read 1984 by Orwell. I disliked those two books.

  3. Mepis - because it just works on Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Distro For Linux Lessons? · · Score: 1

I would recommend Mepis. The reason is that it just works and its interface is similar to windows. It has a live CD and it installs pretty easily, and again, it just works.

  4. Bless our firefighters! on Wildfire Threatens Los Alamos Labs · · Score: 2

I live at San Ildefonso Pueblo. Los Alamos National Lab is within our aboriginal land rights/claims. We have "Sacred Areas" that abut Los Alamos. While our geographic aims may diverge, I can think of no other people I would like up at the "Hill" (we are at 5500 feet and Los Alamos is over 7000 feet) than the security forces at Los Alamos as well as the firefighters that have come from all over (including many Native Americans). May the Lord protect them and the fire abate. Excuse me, I must pack in case we need to evacuate....

I teach business law here in Santa Fe. I have two rules that I want my students to remember:

    1. Don't do stupid things and
    2. Don't get involved with stupid people.

There are many horror stories of people tying to get by on the cheap without an attorney's help - especially in contracts. Don't do it. Go find an attorney and pay the money to get him to write your contract. After all, you can sue the attorney if he messes up! But if you do it and mess up, then you didn't follow rule #1.
And if your boss doesn't want to work with an attorney, then look at rule #2.

  8. Mars should be one way on Funding Promised for Trips to Moon, Mars · · Score: 1

Economically and to prevent contamination, the trip to Mars should be one way. The astronauts should be given all they need to find out if Mars is a safe place to live as well as to conduct experiments. Another trip would be schedule to bring them back after two or three years, if they survive and if they can produce their own fuel for the trip up from the Martian surface (quite an incentive).

  9. Description data base on Image Preservation Through Open Documentation · · Score: 1

How nice it would be to search photo archives for a certain picture by using common words. "tiger left profile blue sky" But this presupposes that whoever wrote a description for the picture knew to input those words. This leads to the quandary of how to describe a picture. Animal (species, View angle) background (composition, color, etc.) Not to mention, grass, wind effect, sun orientation, etc. To me this deserves an open source solution.

We currently run a Motorola Canopy system for our Admin buildings and the antennas are located on the roofs or by a window for line of sight reception and no problems. I suspect the same will hapen with homes - rooftop antenns with feeds to below. I do have an adobe home with chicken wire embedded in the stucco and it does affect radio station reception. But if there was ever an EMP (we live about 12 miles from Los Alamos Nation Labs) I think the home appliance would be ok (Faraday cage).

I agree that this is not "Scientific Proof." However, if the validity of the underlying study is ok then I would assume that some people are born with a disposition to empathy while others would be more cold hearted. But I suspect from my own experience with life that environmental factors (especially into which household you were born - i.e. liberal or conservative) would be more responsible for the decision to be a liberal or a conservative.

The copyright law section 506 says:

Sec. 506. - Criminal offenses (a) Criminal Infringement. - Any person who infringes a copyright willfully either - (1) for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain, or (2) by the reproduction or distribution, including by electronic means, during any 180-day period, of 1 or more copies or phonorecords of 1 or more copyrighted works, which have a total retail value of more than $1,000, shall be punished as provided under section 2319 of title 18, United States Code. For purposes of this subsection, evidence of reproduction or distribution of a copyrighted work, by itself, shall not be sufficient to establish willful infringement.
This to me means criminal conduct. If so, then under the 5th she might be able to protect her records from being discovered. "Might" being the proper usage as the Judge would have to accept that discovery is testimony. A good lawyer can give arguments either way on this.

And by pleading the 5th, she is indicating that she might had done something illegal... a sure bet to get investigated further.

The same can be asked of each of you out there. Do you have the fire in the belly needed to work in politics? Do you even vote?

Like so many the answer is no. Too often the majority is silent allowing things to happen when just a few more vocal or active people would have prevented much harm.

    As Kennedy said, "Ask not..."

In other words, get off you asterisk and get to work! Look at the candidates, make wise choices and VOTE!

I am 52 this year. I like music. A listen to a lot of oldies which I hear on my local oldies station.

I would love to get more oldies (and some newer music too) but I do watch my budget. When a music service advertised 49 cent tracks, I signed on and burned two CD full of memories. Songs I have wanted for a long time. Now I have them and want more but budget wise...

I will NOT burn illegal CD's. Those songs (copyrighted) available on the internet thru file sharing are not legal. I know that and you know that. Do not hide behind arguments. Just Don't Do It. Be Moral. You will feel better about yourself. You can then, like me, listen to Radio or other legal means where advertisers are giving you the opportunity to hear legitimate music just for the price of hearing a few commericals.

Politics has always been about blood and money. Money is used to influence people to think your way. Blood is used when money doesn't work.

I was at his rally in Santa Fe on June 28 (the same day I announced to run for President - see my website: www.christian2004.com) and his talk was the same Democratic line we have heard for a long time. This is not new politics. Dean's approach is still about money. Getting money from small donations is easier thru the internet but it is still the same old politics.
