Actually, my guess is the market doesn't give a rat's ass. Do you really think offering a 400 POS Linux computer makes a real difference in the bottom line of a company like HP? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but this "analysis" is misguided.

God, you must be a mathemetician. Let's consider the numbers {1,1,1,1,2,6}. 2 is the average number here, agreed? I guess that explains why exactly half are better, and half are worse.

This is a pretty tacky little demonstration, but I reserve the right to be tacky to nitwits.

Absolutely right, unless you're in a more dangerous field that warrants strict liability. Then you're responsible no matter what the damages are. Interestingly enough (and oh so difficult for many law students to understand) your actions would be no different either way. Hope you can figure out why.

I don't think it was necessary for you to put the IANAL comment on your post, its pretty clear. For instance, if I, in a paint related thread, were to write, "Don't buy brushes - if you live the open can in the room for a day or two, it will paint the walls by saturating the air with paint, which will obviously be transferred to the walls," then I clearly don't have to preface it with IANAP (I am not a painter), my sheer ignorance will make it obvious.

In a criminal case, the prosecution has the burden of proving BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT that you are guilty. Its not even that rare for a defendant to provide no defense; it's not their responsibility to defend themselves. Of course in practice, it helps to discredit what evidence the Prosecution provides, but the burden solely and always rests on the prosecution.

What's remarkable about /. is the number of experts it creates. I once heard a psychology student complain "Psychology is the only serious field in which everyone, despite complete lack of training, considers themselves an expert." Well, this person obviously never came here. I could post an article about the most remote precedent set by English Common Law in the middle ages, and there would be 700 tech support people on here offering a lengthy interpretation.

    well, YGWYPF.

That's your whole reply? Okay... Your problem is your view of what constitutes valuable property. What about time? When a plumber fixes your house, should he be paid. He hasn't lost anything tangible. If I spend a year formulating an idea and you take it, you've taken advantage of my time just as you have for the plumber (or lawyer, or any service profession). I don't really expect you to get anywhere with objections, because your point is untenable; however, if you keep posting nonsense, i'll keep replying.

I can't say how stupid this argument is... First argument - Do you believe in any property rights? What if I dig up some gold? I didn't make it, I found it... I sure as hell didn't create it. I did, however, do some kind of work (finding, digging) to make the gold valuable (as opposed to in the ground).

I'm assuming you might be a little too slow to see the analogy here: "finding gold" --------> "finding" ideas. Well, at least that part of your argument is clearly meaningless... Let's look at IP in general.

Well first of all, the idea of patents and copyrights in general is crucial to the development of any kind of innovation. No reason to slave away developing software, movies, music, if there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You can talk all you want about people doing it for the love, but people, for better or worse, love money.

Whats really mind-boggling isn't that you hold this idea (well, okay, it's pretty mind boggling), but that you're militant about it, and putting down people that disagree with it (especially with the kind of horrible reasoning that you do). The really sad thing is that you have figured out how to use a computer; breeding can't be far behind.

Well, this is my first time posting to /., though I've been lurking for a good while. My perspective is of a very computer literate student, albeit one whose field is not Computer-related (a likely math poli-sci or math-philosophy double major at Stanford). I've pretty much always used IE, although sometimes at school I've booted up mozilla, and back in the day used netscape some.

Reading the posts today intrigued me enough that I downloaded the lastest Firebird build, and starting tooling around on it. Immediately the tabs appealed to me and I was generally pleased. I then decided to browse over to one of my favorite sites, ESPN.com. To my dismay, the page wouldn't load correctly (the error was rather large, with the navigation bar loading in the middle of the content). Although I'm speaking from very limited experience in this area, this type of experience seems to be exactly the kind of thing that might turn "ordinary" users away. If I can't view one of my most commonly visited sites, why waste my time? There aren't many features that can make up for this kind of trouble. I'd be curious to hear any other opinions on this issue, and am glad to be finally getting involved.
