While I realise this is neither here nor there, has anyone looked into using the Motion Compensation and iCMP(sp) bits on the Rage128 chips (or any chip with motion comp) for DVD decoding under Linux?
Gee, its getting amazing to see what xanim can do, huh?
Just a thought for all software developers like me who want to test an app on differnt plaforms.. Apple has a package for MacOS developers that has all OSs from 7.1 to 8.6 on a DVD for your compatibility testing pleasure; Prehaps the same with Linux and *bsd would be useful as well?
I got mine like a year ago, but lately it started giving me really odd problems, 'specially in games. Terrible sound corruption, echoing and the worst when playing Q3 -- the sound was 2-to-6 seconds behind the action. I got fed up with ti yesterday and go an el cheapo Asound PCI for 15 bucks. enough to tide me over until I decide betwean the SB128 and SB512(Live).
Actually, I have some *cough* friends *cough* at Bitboys Oy who've told me Alpha silicon engineering amples have been available for about a month and a half..
The fact remains, though, that the speculated release dat is still Q2'00. So you've got 9 months to wait -- Buy a Maxx now, and wait and see the Glaze 3d.
I have a feeling not. At least, not right off -- The designs are sufficiently disimilar to make it a mjor headache, I'm sure.
I don't suppose some keen driver hacker who is not me could look and see what changes can be made? For both Gnome and KDE look equally stupid in 640x480x4.
Well, if Apple can deliver this for under 1000 USD, I'd even go in for it. I've never been a big iMac fan (I think they look dorky), but with a new colour scheme (and LCD display, perhaps?) running MacOS X Client, BSD or Linux, it would almost rule. But knowing Apple, they ruin this idea as well and make it too expensive, or cripple it in some way. I hope they bring back Mezzanine.
Domino, athought it IS IBMs Baby, is still extra on most models, esp the 170e (Red Stripe) we have. The basic setup is the IBM HTTP Server for for OS/400 (quite a catchy name), but Apache is being ported as we speak.
The Firewalling software that IBM makes, however, doesn't run on the '400 really -- It run on the Integrated Netfinity Card (formerly IPCS (formerly FSIOP)) inside a '400 box running NT. As much as a I like NT *cough*, I still think OS/400 is a bunch'a oats better.
As for there not being any information, I've always thought in my heart of hearts that that is a strength. If "a big bad hax0r" doesnt know how to get information out of an OS/400 space, then theres nothing he can do. You're right in saying out machine is more than a dedicated server, though. It stores most of out Accounting, payroll, ledgers, etc-- But those are in OS/400 File space and most still require QSECOFR access to read.
Oh yeah, SNA-over-twinaxial does suck. Its how IBM punishes us for not using OS/2.:)
After all the flap about Linux-vs-NT, how about a *real* realworld benchmark -- Have the OS in question pull a 24 hour shift as the WCArchive server-- Whomever puches packets faster and crashes less, wins!
Never been to an install fest, but would like to. My question is one of what platforms are usually represented? Intel, obviously, and probably Alpha, but what about PowerPC?
I ask because I have a Mac Powerbook 1400 and would like to wedge mkLinux on to is (I've been told its been done), but my expertise is really in Intel Linii, and could use some help-- How likely would I be to find a PPC Linux / mkLinux guru there? Thanks.

...and it can mow your front lown, boil the cat and make thousands of juliene fries. :)

First Post?
Well, you must admit that it is very keen, instead of saying "Running Linux Editon 2", just saying "The Horse Book".
I wonder where Tim or whoever got the idea of using animals for refernce in the first place?
I don't suppose this is the same Alan Cox as the one on the ELKS / linux-86 listserv?
Thats quite bogot'ed of you. It's the same everwhere -- In the deep south its the Baptists, in the North-East its Epoiscopalian.
Though, you're right about the wages - I think we're third fromt he bottom.

Thats as laughable as running MacOS on an RS/6000 or AS/400. Gee, I wanna see OS/400 on my daVinci. :)
Depending on model, but I believe the Northstar boards are part number 1125-AA565. Don't quote me though.
