  1. Probably on Are AUI to AUI Null Cables Possible? · · Score: 1

I think an xcvr would be easier, too, but a quick look at a pinout list makes me think it'd be possible. I haven't tried it; I can't recall the last time I saw an Ethernet AUI port. IANAEE (Electical Engineer), YMMV

  2. what kind of tar? on Ask Slashdot: >2GB Backup Software for Linux? · · Score: 4

I use standard GNU tar v 1.12 to back up several systems to 12G DAT tapes; and have never had a problem using the '--multi-volume' switch to put an 18G filesystem on 2 tapes.

"Carbon Tetrachloride is used to make phosgene gas. Phosgene is a very lethal gas and was used in World War 1. The gas is made by heating carbon tetrachloride." -- Poor Man's James Bond v1; "Poisons" section. It doesn't take much heat.

it goes on to say that "60 minutes of breathing 10ppm can be dangerous", and that phosgene has an odor of musty hay, which can be smelled at about 6ppm.

It shouldn't take much ventilation to prevent dangerous concentrations from building up; I'd try some different coolants first...

"how come I hear a vaccum noise"... possibly becuz you have an overactive imagination. I peeled 15 drives for their platters a couple of weeks ago, Western Digital, Quantum, Micropolis, Seagate, Priam, one Tandem, and a couple of really odd birds. Every one had a very well filtered vent hole; generally on the "dirty" side of the drives' main filter media.

The vent is generally on the top, and is generally a pattern of 6 holes (5 around, one in the middle). A couple of the older drives in my sample have a little plastic button embedded in the metal plate; most just have holes in the metal itself.

    KABOOM

I wouldn't have tried this myself before, but now that I've seen someone else doing it, I think I gots to... My thanks to Dr Ffreeze for proving out an insane idea. I've got this little freaky 486 mobo that'll do 80Mhz straight, with an AMD 5x86 on it it'd be 240Mhz... what a beguiling thought. Quake on a 486...

  6. It ain't software on Dual Channel ISDN on Linux? · · Score: 1

at least, if it's an external device. If it hooks up to a serial port, or presents a serial port interface to the machine (like internal POTS modems), then the software ain't got a lot to do with dual or single channel operation.

If it's not the init string, it may well be your ISP's end. I know that the PortMaster 3 (and probably most work-alikes) will dump the second channel until you get authorized, and won't pick it back up unless the ISP's RADIUS record says you're allowed multiple simultaneous ports.

I spent a good 24 hours staring at pppd, isdn4linux, and the associated kernel stuff a few months ago trying to figure out why I couldn't get both channels of my ISDN line connected, at the urging of my ISP's "technical staff". Once I read up a little on the equipment they were using, I figured the problem out. It only took another couple of days to convince them that it really was their problem.

Just 'cuz they do it for a living doesn't mean they don't make mistakes, no matter how hard they protest otherwise.

The discussion on slashdot (and elsewhere) is press he couldn't have bought any other way. It might not be worth the price, but consider the hordes of techies that Gore ticked of by inventing the internet, who were considered to be pretty solidly in his camp before that. Tough demographic to reach.

And as for good publicity vs. bad publicity, there's not much difference. Publicity is the point. Forget who said it, but "say whatever you like about me, just so long as you spell my name right."
