    In those samples I've got there are 4 different "Internet Mail Service" machines, and two different Sendmail machines. I suspect that the political apointees are given their own network to play with and trash as they like, while the real sysadmins keep the backend networks running with a "Real OS".

    Never dealt with the guy, he's been helpful, polite, and informed in the conversations I've had with him.

    Unless the lines were in some serious sheathing, most backhoes wouldn't even twitch going through it. If the operator wasn't watching the hole close (most tend to be more concerned about where the bucket's going) he'd probably never notice it.

    As an aside, I once worked with a gentleman who could knock your hat off with the bucket of his hoe (I held still, most he tried it on wouldn't). I saw him pick up a boiled egg in the bucket without breaking the shell. That kind of trick requires a level of skill not equalled by most airplane pilots. Those machines are *not* that easy to operate, and idiots don't tend be allowed on them.

    The little reciever pods generally placed about 1/4 mile before weigh stations on the interstates...

    The "you are driving too fast" signs; if you've seen one you know what I'm talking about...

    The continued, unmolested existance of these things is a mystery. They're not watched, generally. Have we all become so spineless as to tolerate this crap? Is there no urge for constructive vandalism anymore?

    Government mandated paid vacations. Of course, they're taxed to absurd levels anyway, which kinda follows. I've heard 85% to 90% of income is standard.

    umm, the 486sx came out AFTEr the 486dx... The FPU unit (not too different from a 387) was on the die, but disabled.

    either should work depending on which kernel you're using. Set up an output firewall rule of "allow" for each alias device and watch the counters. Works for me.

    ANK has released his "IP Command Reference" (you can find it on the site) that will probably tell you all you need to know.

    I gotta chime in with this: The Monorail's problem was simply corner cutting. If they'd built 'em out of decent parts, they'd have been cool little machines. As it was, they blew their wad on the LCD display and had to use utterly crappy compents throughout the rest of the system.

    And /. does use the ideas of "authorities and hubs", in an organic way: "Some dude and about a bajillion other sent in this really lame starwars story..."

    A quick look at my netscape (4.08 - Linux) mail folders makes 'em look like fairly standard Unix mailbox files to me. Messages separated by a line beginning with "From ", and such. I'm sure there's just tons of options for translating those into any format you'd like; nor should it be hard to hack up something to do *exactly* what you want in Python, Perl, or whatever the language of your choice happens to be.

    Have a look at Hypermail for nice HTML translating and threading, that's just the first thing that comes to mind.
