Microsoft does have something that is somewhat like sudo. They call it EPAL, or "Elevated Privileges Application Launcher".

COBOL is just the beginning of the story. They would have to:

• port JCL to shell scripts
• Move from CA-7 to cron
• create COBOL libraries/intrinsics to emulate tape interfaces, record-based( not stream ) files, console alerts, etc, etc
• figure out how to move from modular, role based security like RACF or TopSecret to a less integrated uid/guid/file permissions based model
• on and on, and on and on.

While there are parts of the mainframe world that are archaic, there's other parts that are much more mature than linux. It's not just a recompile.

Pointed out earlier in this thread, but Fujitsu seems to be the leader in this area.

Check here and look at the ultraportable section. The specs on the P5000 seem to match your requirements.

Also, on the seriously portable side, they have the P1000 (2.2 lbs, no cd) and the P2000 (3.4 lbs, DVD ).
