  1. Things You better consider on What Would You Want In a Large-Scale Monitoring System? · · Score: 1

Now a days you have to consider a monitor tool or tools that can do the following: 1. Event Correlation (don't page me or turn my entire dashboard red if I lose 2 severs in a 20 server load balanced pool) 2. Application Mapping, dashboards, and portals 3. User experience monitoring mapped to hardware ( eliminate finger pointing and shorten problem identification) 4. Ability to publish reports ( reports tailored to the person's skill level. The higher up the food chain the less they will understand very technical graphs) 5. Historical comparisons (We now have to justify clearly why we need the upgrade or the latest and greatest) 6. On large scale monitoring solution you have to manage your database, all this data can pile up quickly What tool you use is not as important as what you do with the information to quickly resolve issues and provide data on the health of your infrastructure.

  2. Cash Cow for the telcos on LA City Votes For Municipal Fiber Network · · Score: 2, Insightful

Not sure why the Telcos and cable companies are fighting this. They can make a killing in managing these networks. Lets do the math, the city incurs all the cost of building the infrstructure. But, the city will have no experience in managing and maintaing a high speed network. Well the only folks with that kind of experience are the big telcos and cable companies. They can charge hugh fees to montitor and maintain these networks without owning any of the infrastructure.

  4. Lost Jobs on House Votes to Launch Do-Not-Call List · · Score: 1

The Direct Marketer's claims of lost the jobs is very hollow. A large numbewr of those jobs reside overseas for the lower wages and increased profits. So, the jobs would have been lost as these telemarketer's would have slowly moved these jobs to places overseas anyway.

  5. Re:Sun service contract rates are very costly on Sun's Schwartz Speaks Out on Linux, SCO · · Score: 1

Yes, Sun's service contracts are expensive. But has anyone really complained about the service they provide. Since most companies servers sit in a lights out datacenter that is more than likely in another state than the support staff, Sun provides you with the knowledge that a well trained tech will show up for the most part. As, more companies switch to Linux and Intel boxes they will buy support contracts from smaller places with less qualified service tech. Just remember "The cheap man pays twice". Yes, no question Linux is much cheaper and buying generic intel boxes also saves money. If you applications have SLA's and uptime matters spend the money on a proven vendor.

  8. As the boat sails away on Time Warner Cable NYC Begins DVR Distribution · · Score: 1

It seems most have missed why the cable companies are pushing these boxes out. These boxes will render the current rating system useless. Instead of a sampling of a small group of people they will be able to track the masses, then data mine our viewing habits. On the bright side quality show will stay on TV. On the downside they will have a record of everything you have ever watched and while watching when you switched channels. Unlike the RIAA television execs are reworking their current business model.

  9. How do these supena's work on The RIAA's Hit List Named · · Score: 1

What is I share a song on kazaa that is really a blank file with a phony name. Can I also be sued by the RIAA for fraud. Also, how many of these people being served have invalid files on the computers. Does the RIAA verify each file before they file the court papers. With this shotgun approach I see a few problem once in a court of law. IP address and file names is not enough proof of piracy and copyright enfringment. They will need the actual files to guard against the simple mistaken file defense. So maybe they have placed a few traps out on the internet, if a honeypot is not so legal will there file traps be legal?

Growing up in the heart of union country, Michigan. I thought always thought one of the factors to bringing down some american industries was the unions demands. Well, now that my job industry in danger. I wish there was an union who could protect our jobs and represent the industry. Hell, we as computer professionals there is not even a powerful political lobby to fight our cause. First the call centers, then various levels of support centers and now development shops.
