  1. To be fair on Word Processors: One Writer's Retreat · · Score: 1
Desktop publishing tools are not appropriate for things like writing a novel. There is no point is distracting an author with font selection, pagination, etc, since the publisher will re-do all of that anyhow.

However, the tech writers that I know tell me that Microsoft Word is neither a good text entry tool, nor a good desktop publishing program. Framemaker is the one that I am used to using, and it seems to have a pretty good rep with the tech writers also. It is rather pricey, however. I still hope that Adobe will change their mind one of these days and release a linux version. (There was a very usable beta that they decided not to make a product out of.) At this moment, I have a copy of Frame running, remote displayed from a Solaris box onto my linux desktop.

To weigh in on the Emacs vs Vi war, I find that knowledge of vi is essential for low-level system administration tasks. I tend to use it for any quick little edits. For heavy-lifting, like programming, I use Xemacs. I like the auto-indentation, and find syntax highlighting makes code much easier to read. I know that gvim will do just about anything that emacs does these days, but I have been using emacs for years, and am too stubborn to switch.

If you buy rough-cut 2x4's, you will find that they are exactly 2 inches by 4 inches. Smooth-finished 2x4's are sanded down from rough-cut ones, and hence are smaller.

Not really. If you read carefully, you will see that this box is a satellite receiver. Your TV tuner will not hook right up to your dish. If you want to record one show and watch another, you would need a second satellite receiver box.

Also note that there is only one input from the dish. Dual-tuner DirectTV-Tivo's have two inputs, one per tuner. While I have never really understood why this is required, it does make me tend to believe that this box is only single tuner.

Finally, the hardware specs are not all that relevent, but not for the reasons stated. Satellite broadcasts are already MPEG encoded, so there is no need for the box to do compression. They only need to do the much less computationally intensive decompression.

  4. Engineering applications on Recommend Apple, Lose Your Job? · · Score: 1
In our case, the simple fact is that the tools we need (EDA tools for ASIC design) are available on x86 linux, and not on any variant of Apple hardware. Add to that the fact that our linux infrastructure was already in place before OS-X was even released, it is not surprising that we have no Macs.

While OS-X seems to be pretty capable, it is still very new. Theoretically, although we can not use it for the compute servers, it could be used for things like DNS, web servers, etc. However, there is very little motivation to add another OS to do that, when the one we have settled on already is more than capable of the job.

  5. NiMH and Renewal on Rechargeable Batteries - Yes or No? · · Score: 1
I tried the "Renewal" brand batteries first. While they are much better than NiCd's, I have had a lot of problems with the batteries going bad. Mostly leaking problems, sometimes just ceasing to hold a charge.

I switched to NiMH batteries and have had much better luck. None of the batteries have died on me yet. However, the problem that I have with these is that they will lose a charge just sitting around. How big of an annoyance this is varies by the application.

For my digitial camera, for instance, I have two sets of NiMH batteries, one in the camera and another spare set in the case. And then I also carry a set of alkaline batteries, in case all the NiMHs are flat. These get used only until I get the others recharged, and then they go back to being spares. Seems to work so far, but it really isn't ideal.

You are correct. SCO's new license agreement for Linux violates the GPL...

Actually, people are assuming that SCO's new license agreement will violate the GPL. While this is most likely correct, they have not yet actually announced the terms of their "license" for linux, and therefore any discussion of lawsuits or prosecution is a bit premature...
