  1. Re:Depends on Cell Phone Service as High Speed Internet Link? · · Score: 1

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobileoptions/b roadband/index.jsp If you live in one of those markets, and you are reasonably close to a cell tower that is EV-DO enabled, you can expect 300-700kbps down or more. In major major metros I typically get 800lbps-1mbps down. I haul my laptop all over the place and people are taken aback by the fact that I have broadband access whereas they are struggling with their 802.11 cards (especially in airports). A favorite trick of mine is driving down the road (well, someone else driving), and I'm streaming live video off the web, at high resolution. It's amazing stuff. Right now most people have no clue what EV-DO is, so those of us who are keen to it and are willing to shell out $80 a month for it have pretty exclusive high speed access to the network. Once more people jump on the bandwagon, the network will become saturated and slow down i'm sure.

I pay $80 a month for unlimited use of Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service. Sure, I could use WiFi options, if they existed in every single place i wanted to use my laptop. You have no idea how nice it is to be able to travel all around the city, and in many cities across the nation, and have an instant 500kbps - 1mbps connection nearly everywhere I go -- even in a moving vehicle. Very sweet!!!

I'm not advertising, trust me. I have no vested interest in the company. I'm just a very satisfied customer. As with anything, YMMV, but my experience has been unbelievably positive in markets that are EV-DO enabled.

My experience with Verizon's new EV-DO service has been amazing. On a bad day, I get 500-700kbps down, on a good day, I'm pulling 1.2MBps down, 100k up, right out of the air ... while moving in a car at 80mph ... or at the airport .. or wherever. And YES, they do have a hack which will let the aircards work under linux. Just do a google for "verizon" "linux" "aircard", you're bound to find it. It's simply amazing to be able to have a broadband connection almost ANYWHERE I go! I can wander around town, or travel across the country, and not have to pay anyone anything additional for access. The other cool thing is to see my laptop working when everyone else is struggling to find access. The only thing to note though, is Verizon is still in their deployment phase for EV-DO, so in areas that are not yet EV-DO enabled, you will fall back to their 1XRTT service (automatically). That pulls down 144k, which when compressed with their Venturi software, isn't half bad for email/surfing.
