  2. variety is great on Software Monoculture in Schools? · · Score: 1

Where I went to school, we had a great variety, and it was one of my favorite things about the school. In the CS department, there were 3 windows XP labs, 2 solaris labs, and 1 linux lab (running redhat 8, I believe). All of these ran on brand new Dell 3GHz machines with flat-panel monitors. The CS department servers were running on Solaris, and every XP machine had a link to Exceed right there on the desktop when anyone logged in. Each student had their own network storage, accessible as a network drive on XP, the home folder on unix/linux, and the home folder via FTP access. It was great--turning in assignments was as simple as an FTP and an SSH, poof, done. In the library, there is a lab stocked with half windows XP, and half Mac OS X machines. There are also approximately 20 more labs scattered around campus, some open to all students, some restricted to students of certain departments. My point is, I was never forced into anything. Being a die-hard Mac user since I was 12 years old, it was really cool that I wasn't locked into Windows. For all you high schoolers out there: find a school that gives you a choice! The UC system is particularly good about this =)

  3. It's already been done on Starbucks - Your Next Music Superstore? · · Score: 1

At Starbucks on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, they've already done this. It's actually pretty cool--they've got a pretty good library of music, and it's expanding pretty quickly, from what I've been able to tell.

  4. Re:Personally... on Geeks and Poker? · · Score: 1

They say black-jack and video poker are the only real way to leave with cash.

Well, yes and no. I go to vegas 3 to 4 times a year, and usually (2-3 times a year) come back a winner. I almost exclusively play poker there. That said, slots/video poker are the only way to win a lot of money at one time. In certain video poker games, there is actually a positive expectation, because of the massive payout when you hit a royal flush.

Poker requires hours and hours of playing time, plus skill, to turn a relatively small profit. For me, it's worth it because poker is a lot of fun. It's always cool to sit down with all your buddies at the blackjack table and have a few (free!) drinks, of course.

  5. Re:By what logic? on What The RIAA Gets Out Of File Sharing · · Score: 1

This is garbage and it's being propagated all over this thread. The difference is that the vast majority of car theives steal cars for profit. The vast majority of 12-year-old girls do not download Britney Spears songs for profit. They're not resellers. In the unlikely case that p2p does go away, it will just piss people off and drive up sales of bootleg albums and the RIAA will have an even bigger problem on their hands.

In a related story, Lindon, Utah based SCO has sued software maker FWB for "allegedly using three Roman alphabet characters in its moniker." According to SCO chief Darl McBride, "we realized that IBM might have been copying our naming conventions by using the three-roman-character (TRC) advanced naming system, and clearly FWB is doing the same. I'm very disappointed that they have come to this." McBride also said that they might have to go after AT&T next because, "we're not sure yet, but our lawyer Mr. Boies has determined that the ampersand doesn't really count."

  10. where i come from... on Big Company on Campus · · Score: 4, Interesting

In the CS department at UCLA, Microsoft has been around for a long time. On the first day of "Intro to Programming," every student got a brand-spankin-new, still shrink-wrapped box of MS Visual Studio 6.0.

Frankly this is brilliant marketing on Microsoft's part. When these students learn to program, they are now familiar and comfortable within VS. So what are they going to use later in life?

On the other hand, Microsoft is anything but pervasive in the CS labs. Probably about 50% of the machines have Windows only (but they all have Exceed on them also). About another 30% are Solaris, and the rest are Linux. Also, Microsoft products are free for engineering students, from Windows XP to BizTalk server. Even so, professors don't encourage Windows use--in fact most projects once you're out of the intro level are required to be done on UNIX or Linux.

I don't see this as as big a problem as it's being made out to be here. Windows will be shoved down everyone's throats no matter where they are. Smart people will still investigate all their options and made an educated decision.

If you're in California (or even if you're not), most definitely check out UCLA. The campus is awesome. It has a very good engineering program. I'm CS and Math, but have a lot of friends in EE, ME, AE, CSE etc., and we all love it there. But the engineering department is most certainly not the only thing on the campus. There are a ton of people and the dorm life is great. Westwood is a great place to hang out. And the, ahem, *scenery* is a hell of a lot better than you'd get at MIT. Not to mention weather.

"We're fighting for the right in the industry to be able to make a living selling software," McBride told the audience. He compared this right to the ability "to send your children to college" and "to buy a second home."

    What??

No, seriously. I don't get it. What the flying fuck does this have to do with anything? Buy a second home? I am honestly flabbergasted at the sheer idiocy of this man.

    I've gone speechless.

  14. Where does the money go? on Ask a Music Producer/Publicist About Filesharing and the RIAA · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm a big advocate of the prosperity of music artists, especially small-time ones. I go to a lot of concerts. I like to buy indie music direct from the band. I generally try to avoid buying music from big-name production houses because I'm sick of all the gratuitous and pervasive advertisements and endorsements that come along with it.

That being said, my question is (and I hope you can even answer this): when I lay down my $15 for a CD, where does that money go? How much goes directly to the artist? The producers? Publicists and people in your position? Record company CEOs? Charities? Etc etc.

Basically I'm concerned that if I fork over $15 because I really like the music, I think that a big portion of that should go directly to the artists themselves, but in reality $14.95 is ending up making CEOs wallets fatter.

What is your view on Affirmative Action?

As a college student in the UC system, but a politically rightist town (LA), I hear a lot of different views on the subject. I am also, however, a white guy that grew up in an upper-middle class neighborhood. Now, I'm all for diversity, but do you think affirmative action is really the right way to get diversity into schools? If so, why? If not, what do you propose? Would you try to do anything to solve racial diversity issues at a lower level than that of the university?
