  1. Re:it runs in windows! on Free Be · · Score: 1

I think that you're missing the point here. What they are really doing is giving away a limited feature product. They want the MS users to be able to try their product without going through the hassle (and risk) of repartitioning their drives. That whole process can be pretty scary for me and I've done it dozens of times. If you want the full featured edition you're going to have to pay. If you already/plan to use Be5 as your full time OS then you're probably going to want the full featured version anyway. I would suspect that as in the past Be will give some sort of discount for those that are upgrading anyway.

While it does look a little akward, your wife's m100 hotsync cable should work just fine with your IIIxe. I sync my IIIe with my computers at work and at home. I have my cradle that came with my IIIe on my windows machine at work and I use the m100 cable at home. I've also made use of the m100 cable in my truck in connection with my IIIe, a null modem adapter, and my GPS receiver.

I too appreciate an honest review of how software performs under actual usage, but this piece looked just a bit too much like a sales pitch to me. Maybe it had something to do with the price of the package being printed in large red type as only, $99 in the middle of the first paragraph. Overall this just seemed like a too good to be true review. Perhaps I'm just a pessimist but I'd like to hear the problems with the software too.

Gotta agree with you here. It's really nice to be able to use my left hand for typing and my right (useless) hand for grasping the rock shaped object and pushing it in the right direction. I really don't know what I'd do if I had to hold a stick in my right hand. Maybe I'd just have to learn to onehand type with the right hand instead.

  6. Re:Doesn't anyone remember the Packard Bell fiasco on Unmasking Mis-Labeled CPUs · · Score: 1

As I recall, the big stink with packard bell wasn't so much that they were overclocking (that may be true also, I don't remember) but that they were installing used parts in "new" machines. The problem was that they were taking working parts from machines returned for warranty replacement and putting them in machines labeled as new. These machines should have been labeled as refurbished or factory rebuilt but were not.

Just curious...Exactly why would this help AMD win the war over Intel? Do you really believe that AMD dealers are scumbags less often than Intel dealers? The only possible reason that I can think of for this is that AMD chips usually don't respond as well to overclocking and that therefore people might be less willing to try it.

Seems to me that this is a bonus for Intel rather than AMD. Something is actually being done by Intel to help their customers (damn that's strange) aviod fraud.

Fraud don't respect you and it don't respect brand names.

This business model kind of concerns me. If all of your revenue is derived from supporting a product there just doesn't seem to be all that much motivation to make the user interface everything that it could be. Ideally a piece of software shouldn't require any support at all. But if your only shot at eating next week it to make the user interface akward, the commands cryptic and the documentation sparce then that's probably what you're going to do.

Personally, I'd much rather pay for a piece of software that works right the first time. I want to be able to install software and then use it. I don't want to have to send 2 dozen e-mail messages and play phone tag just to get something to work properly.

Seems to me that the software industry would be better motivated to make quality products if supporting broken products were an expense rather than an asset.

These are just my thoughts on the matter. Let me know what you think.

The problem I'd see with making a laptop of this size is that the power run the backlight would be huge! What you'd end up with would be a rather large laptop with some rather large and hot batteries stuck inside it. I realize that battery technology is improving all the time, but It's just not at the point yet where a laptop with such a screen and the hardware to back it up would be useful for a long period of time. I also wonder about the utility of having such a big screen on a laptop since the usual format of such computers puts your face about 9" away from the screen. Well anyway that's my 2 cents. Lizard

I fail to see the logic behind this. It's not OK, for a for-profit enterprise to keep your credit card number and address, but it is OK to give a bunch of bankers access to your financial records and home address so that they can issue your credit card number in the first place. Face it, if there's going to be business taking place in this world it's going to happen through for-profit channels.

It's not that I don't think that MS is sleazy, but at the same time I am sitting here with my wallet containing Visa cards issued by Citibank and Associates. These companies have equally bad records for expanding well beyond the sphere of business that they origionally started in and buying out all of their smaller competition.

The moral of the story is that if you want to buy stuff online, you're stuck with the process being coordinated by scum that's just out there to make a buck. Who cares if it's MS or MBNA it's all the same rat race if you ask me.
