    >> Why space should be untouchable to some strikes me as weird.

The simple reason is that its a new and final chance. There are no more new frontiers. Do we still have to make the same stupid mistakes over and over again, or can we actually act on what we have learned time and again through costly experience, that weapons don't bring peace, and war is just self-destructive.

That would cost megabucks and the moon is not safe enough for that kind of investment (read: possible to get to/attack by other nations).

Its obvious that a REALLY paranoid country would find somewhere further out... say Mars. To know who is the most paranoid therefore, all we need to do is watch for any country suddenly announcing large Mars-exploration budget increases.

    * Can't use all of the hardrive space you ordered/paid for because you HAVE to keep a recovery partition. (Jeez Toshiba, whats a 50 cent CD compared to your profits on a $1500 laptop and the goodwill of your victi.. err.. buyers?)

    * Can't reinstall your laptop if/when your hard drive crashes because you've just lost your hidden install partition too. Does your laptop just become a very expensive doorstop?

*Can't re-partition your hard drive for fear of messing up the hidden install image partition.

    * ever install or use the copy of Windows that YOU PAID FOR on any other computer.

Please people, vote with your money. Dont buy this Toshiba shit.

  5. Re:I blame Linus Torvalds. on Intel to Increase Linux Support, Release Centrino Drivers · · Score: 3, Insightful

It seems Linus choses the best/most elegant solutions on a purely technical basis rather than non-technical issues such as market forces. He's an engineer not a salesman and there are others, e.g. RedHat, to do that marketing/integration stuff anyway. He probably doesn't even care about supporting users outside the 'hacker set'. This approach means we get the technically best kernel faster and it's uncompromised by marketing issues. Linux is apparently still not intended for non-technical users, THANK GOD. I'd hate to see Linux adopt the same dumbing-down and locking-away approach that Microsoft have in order to appeal to the mass market, i.e. an IQ of 85 and no technical ability. Can you imagine Linux asking you if you really want to rename a file with a different extension?

Thank god Disney partnered with a company famous for non-secure software... Assuming MS's DRM is as insecure and easy to crack as all their other products, and now there will actually be much more protected media around worth pirating, I wonder how long it will take the war3z kiddiez to produce an DeCSS-like utility for MS-DRM protected media?

  7. Change of equipment supplier on New Survey Finds No Linux 'Chill' From SCO Suit · · Score: 1

My boss recently sent out an email saying he was going change from Dell to HP for buying any new equipment (laptops, workstations & servers) because HP are indemnifying linux users against SCO. I don't really care what brand label is on the box I use, but of course I sent him an email with many references that show no one is taking SCO seriously. The HP indemnification thing still seems to be an effective marketing tool for HP, especially to the PHB's who make strategic decisions based on no real understanding and a concern for safety first.

  8. Rip off on Planned Obsolescence and MMORPGs · · Score: 2, Interesting

Even without expansion-packs they are already double-charging as they are service-based product. They should either: * sell the software and give away server time (Unreal Tournament etc.) OR * Give away the software but charge for connection time (AOL etc.) Until they do that, only hardcore enthusiasts will buy MMORPGs so through their over-greed they are bringing on their own failure. I am happy playing UT2003 for free. I'll never buy a MMORPG until they change theire marketing model.
