I think most of it comes down to cost or what people think the cost is vs the actual availabilty of the item. For the people who cant get dsl/cable we can leave them out of the equation for this part.

cable / dsl $34-50, however this comes at many speeds. I see people on/. paying 50$ for 256/128 i wouldnt upgrade from dial up for that
But I have NO problem paying 40$ for 3000/384 (bellsouth extreme dsl)
As for the people in rural areas im sure many of them would love to get some form of quicker access to the internet.
Gamers probably have more desire to be on high speed than non gamers. Does mom really need to download her latest chicken recipe any faster or does her son / daughter want to pop tank round into the competition in ut'04
In some cases you get what you pay for and it is worth the cost. But some people dont need broadband, just like most people dont need a $500 graphics card.
Its alot easier to find 10 people willing to work a full time job instead of 20 people to work a part time job which will probably also mean they are working a 2nd job which, if it gives them more hours will have priority over your business..

How many of these same people in todays job market would leave thier nice cushy job to go search for a new job with reason for leaving their old company being, I didnt want to have my fingerprints taken or my handscanned?
While there needs to be more laws concerning employee safety and rights, just to punch in and out people are complaining an awful lot. Do you have a criminal past? Scared you will be commiting a crime in the future and don't want your prints on record?
While I really doubt any of these companies will go bankrupt without biometrics, why should they continue losing money when they can quickly pay for this new technology just by saving money on people goofing off and not showing up. You know it happens, however people are feeling that its treating them like children. Well, get to work on time, go to work, and dont take long lunches. And dont punch your friends in all the time. If one scanner costs 2500$ it would only take 8 hours x 10$/hour x # of people skipping work to pay it off. 1 month for 1 person doing it (31.25 days).
2 weeks for 2 people doing it (15.625)
10 days for 3 people (10.41)
1 week for 4 people doing it (6.9)
With 50 people crews with high turnover I dont see how a company could pass this up.
So while people certainly have the right to not submit to biometrics, companies have the right to save money by not paying cheats. Why should a company pay someone who doesnt want to work and doesnt show up when someone may want / need that job.
They probably just read the mail headers as soon as he replied to the letter they sent him. From this and the time the email was sent they probably had no trouble asking his isp for the user information. Criminals are not always the smartest apples and he probably didnt even have a way to crack the website.
If he wasnt clueless he would have used a dummy email account and checked it via rental computer or at the very least a dial up account using *69 ( which can still leave your number ) and a prepaid credit card / gift card.
This guy reminds me of the old irc script kiddies who would do things from their house and wonder how they were tracked down. While anonomyzers are available it makes me wonder if he,
a. used one b. had used a computer before
As to the FBI ip verifier i find it hard to believe they have anything more advanced then the current jscript / asp / log parsers to pull ip information.

Win 2k pro. I might have 10 minutes a month working on software updates. My computer is not on 24/7 since all it would be doing is wasting electricty. It is however on about 7-10 hours a day and I know enough not to open attachments from strangers, especially the ones that end with.exe . Last BSOD, 2 months ago cant remember what it was for. IE crashes once in a while but thats nothing restarting IE and typing the URL in wont fix, hardly worth mentioning. So, I'm either lucky or things arent that bad when you set a system up right and don't install alot of software from fly by night companies. (Gator etc)
And yes, mom's and kids can FUBAR a system especially if you give them admin rights. But i guess that can be true of anything
I don't mind previews. I actually like watching movie trailer at the theater. I enjoy seeing what new movies are coming out. I however do not enjoy paying 10$ to watch the same commercials I regularly see for free on TV.
On my dvd's I can skip commercials, on tv I can skip commercial, on tivo I can skip commercials, at the movie I am forced to endure these advertisements. On downloaded copies I get no trailers or commercials, however I have a reduced quality movie for free.
How about they add some commercials and let me watch for free? How about they lower the cost to 4$ and leave the commercials? Better yet, free soda and popcorn..well soda and popcorn is how the actual theater makes money. How about instead of trying to prevent something make the actual experience worth it again.
