  3. "L" is for Linux on Linux vs. Windows for Schools? · · Score: 1

I use Fedora Core 4 on my kids' machine. It comes with
lots of edutainment software built in, and is easy to
setup and maintain. I have been able to modify and
install software easily though CVS, YUM, and RPMs.

Once you have a Linux machine running there isn't
much to do to it, unless it fails. If you create an
image of the install and build a bootable CD from that,
the repair of any failed machine would be to replace
the bad part and reload the image. All new machines
could be ready in just a few minutes.

Some of the reasons I would suggest Linux over Windows:
First: Cost. Windows XP will run $60/machine
(School/non-profit pricing), but will not run very well
on anything lower than a 500Mhz. Let's face it, most
schools use 5 year old tech that is donate from companies.

Second: Education. Using Linux allows the kids to see
another OS besides Windows (which they likely use at home).

Third: What wil the teachers actually be doing on these
    machines once they are setup?
    Probably not much.

Fourth: Tux plushies are more cuddly than windws. :)

  4. My personal experience on The Math Behind the Hybrid Hype · · Score: 2, Informative

As the site was apparently /.ed before I could read it, I can not speak to the math therein.

As a hybrid owner, I can speak to the fiscal feasibility of owning a Honda Insight.

    When I purchased my car I was driving 66 miles one-way to work in a 1990 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 4.3 V6 engine.
    At 15-17 miles per gallon that's 7.76 to 8.8 gallons/day (132 mile round trip).
    7.76 * $1.80/gal = $13.97/day in gas
    5 days/week * $13.97/day = $69.84/week
    4 weeks * 69.84/week = $279.36/month
Today's gas price in my area is $2.50/gal this brings this total to $388/month
(FYI: The truck was paid off so there was no note)

    With the hybrid:
Car note of $265/month (Purchased used with 7,600 miles for $11,500)
    Decrease in insurance of $20/month
    Subtotal $245/month
    @ 65 mpg = 2.03 gal/day
    @ $1.80/gal = $73/month
    @ $2.50/gal = $101.54/month

    Totals:
    @ $1.80/gal = $318
    @ $2.50/gal = $346.54

    Difference of:
@ $1.80/gal the Car is more expensive by $38.64/month
@ $2.50/gal the Truck is more expensive by $41.46/month

Even when the car was costing me more money in the end I had something tangable.
With the truck all the cost was in fuel which has no resale value after use.
It may be good for the environment, but for my particular situation it was a financially sound purchase as well.

So it is your stance that he should be held accountable for something he joked about 5 or so years ago?
Also are the writers at Wired psychic? Did they look into his head and know what his "intent" was?
Intent is extreemly difficult to prove without a trail of acts all leading in the same direction. One statement does not a trail make.
Even if he intended the software for illegal use, that doesn't make the act of writing or even distributing it illegal.

A copyright violation did not occur until the first person transfered the first piece of copyrighted data. Then that person is PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for the act.

Based on what you have written, if a person says, "I want to rob a bank." and they even post a few security "holes" at that bank, then then that person is accountable if that bank is robbed years later.

The USA is a Republic. That's how it was designed. The people rarely have a "direct" say into anything. If we did we would be a Democracy. We have Democratic "style" elections, but the majority does not always rule.

We are moving to Socialism with programs like:
Free medical care (paid by the government with taxpayer money.)
Welfare checks(paid by the government with taxpayer money.)
Free housing(paid for by the government with taxpayer money.)

Each "government sponsored" program that is started to "help the poor" simply takes money from the middle and upper class taxpayer and gives it to those in the lower class that want it (Which doesn't bring the lower up only the upper down). Since these are government programs they are easy to manipulate and exploit meaning that those that are the least honest get the most from them.

So the USA is moving from a Republic to a Socialist Republic.
    ...but this is off topic.
