Why does a question about batteries turn into a flame war? Anyway, here goes...
In my experience, NiMH, or Nickel Metal Hydride, batteries seem to be pretty good as far as holding a charge, not wearing out nearly as quickly as the old NiCd batteries do.
There are other types out there, but the NiMH batteries seem to be the best choice for price/performance...
