Speaking as a former semifinalist from the silicon valley, the reason why California doesn't have the kind of showing that states like NY have is that basically, no one, not the students, teachers, nor the potential mentors in the local universities (i.e. Stanford & Berkeley) know about or care about the competition.
Yeah and now they have a modern infrastructure and greatly improved chances for a better life.
For some reason though, lots of Americans like to think that they were better off when they were substinence farming and living like slaves so that the parasites (oops I mean noble Tibetans monks) could chant OMMM for the rest of their lives.

You can fix it by going to console and typing "flush". Also I found that checking "compressed textures" works as well.
