Agreed! The FreeBSD 5.x distro has taken a lot of flack for how long it's taken to get to "Stable". This highlights why it is difficult to bring in change.
The connection was (re)established unamplified. The team had to shutdown the connection, tilt the antenna down, and climb a latter to remove the amp. Then of course, re-aim the antenna and try again.
As one of the judges, I can provide the GPS coordinates and you can use your favorite topo maps to determine if it is indeed possible. We will be putting up images and data on the contest page as well as www.adversarialsciencelab.net website sometime today.
It's worth noting that we could have gone a lot further than the 35 miles we did achieve. We had some terrain problems. We ran out of road and it turns out a Chevy Cavalier makes a horrible offroad vehicle. Plus it didn't help any that one of the teams was trying to jam us when we were trying to get our final readings.

Sumdoo has some info on what happened to us...
Did I mention that one of the other teams also was trying to jam us... sore losers!
We were contrained by the terrain and our vehicle. We ran out of road and tried to get farther out with our rental. Who woulda known, a Chevy Cavalier is a horrible off-road vehicle.

Linux is NOT giant Free. I believe Linus has stated that he sees no reason to be.
All, check out http://www.wifi-shootout.com/home.html for the winning contest info (including GPS readings). We will be posting pictures soon.

We were using the antenna to keep the competition away. Anytime a team looked like they were doing well we threatened to point our antenna at them.
