Two envelopes. One contains the list of devices+username. The other contains the number of the correlating entry in the first envelope and the password. Envelopes are kept in two seperate locations. Fact of password retrieval is logged and/or requires authorization from PHB, etc.
I just got on their "whitelist". They sent me a confirmation email, saying how they will deliver the messages but they do not guarantee the fact that the user is actually going to get them in their Inbox since their junk mail filter is apparently configured based on individual settings.
Well fuck, if AOL thinks I am going to PAY them in order to reach their "users", AOL is wrong. I will give these users an email account with me. Come to think of it, I'll do that with Verizon's customers too, at least until Verizon learns how to detect spam.
Get Manhunt. Many weapons, from a plastic bag to a chainsaw [last level only, AFAIK]. Three different ways to kill an enemy with every weapon except the projectiles.
What a croak of bullshit. Darknets. Yah. If someone in my office sets up a "darknet" [holy shit what a name, is this guy with the government], its not going to be because they want to talk to their friends from the neighbourhood al qaida cell, its because they want to download content. So next time I am billed for traffic/look at the management console -- I *will* notice that something is going on. Just like the time some tard on our team wrote a script that generated 6k email messages a day.
a relatively cheap setup for data/service redundancy for a small business.
* two identical servers, running linux (of course). * heartbeat * drbd * two UPS
Notes, Ins, Outs and What Have You's
service redundancy
heartbeat is used to make 2 servers look as if they were one. if one of the servers dies, heartbeat makes sure the other assumes the ip address and has all the relevant services started.
data redundancy
drbd is a network block device. again, it looks like one device, but when data is written to it, its actually being written to 2 seperate locations. if one box goes down, heartbeat makes sure drbd makes the other box primary.
hardware
these two call for a dedicated network and serial connection. so 2 nics and a serial port per box. definitely raid array of some sort.
see drbd.org for more details.
this is not a 100% proof setup, but its cheap and covers most of the bases. of course, it requires a linux dude to get it all to work.
i think e-machines is not the culprit here. its most probably best buy.
we'd tell people to return dead on arrival products to best buy, and 4 weeks later that same product is sold to somebody else, as new, not working. since we track serial numbers and retailers - we KNOW best buy sometimes puts returned merchandise back on the shelf without testing it first.

Fuck you, Gorman. I am blogging this.
er, by creating a fucked up homogenous environment which encourages or rather beats 3rd parties into writing crappy software?
