The other benefit of the Open Cable platform is that Interactive Television Application Providers can develop applications to a single standard, and theoretically deploy them to all of the cable networks.
By allowing people to join only by invite, Google has created a groundswell of interest and demand for gmail. Internal testing would not have created the same effect.

Last time I watched, media sources were catering in a fashion more towards what people can relate to.
Every night watching the local news you hear something about a house fire, or murder(s), drugs, kidnapping, etc. These type of stories resonate pretty deeply with people -- or at least with what they fear. What bothers me is that they are never put into a (statistical) context.
The Lacy Peterson story, the whole Jacko fiasco, not to mention the serial sniper (and arsonist), are given front page headlines, while the war in Iraq is given only token mention.
