Personally, I'm horribly offended that you think that the sight of a female nipple is potentially dangerous to your children...or to you. After all, male nipples are just fine on prime time. It's only women who are persecuted in this fashion in America; in fact, the outrage about Janet's nipple is a form of hate against women. But I digress; this discussion is not about hate crimes themselves, it's about attempting to prevent the discussion of hate on the Internet.

mmm, I hate to burst your bubble, but Sun has been smart enough to realize that cheap x86 systems have a strong market, and not only have been selling to that market, but are building future strategies based on Linux and Solaris x86. In fact, Sun is slimming down quite a bit, and is getting more into offering software+hardware+services packages; they're becoming the "alternative" IBM, who also has deals with Microsoft and who also sells a multitude of operating systems. Fact is, both Sun and IBM sell what customers want. Whatever customers want.

So it will also be good news to you that Sun is developing strategies around software stacks that work on Solaris SPARC, Linux on SPARC, Solaris x86, Wintel, RedHat, SuSE, OSX, HPUX, etc...with legacy application integration. The new data center will be built like Legos; whatever cpus or components you want get plugged in, with a GUI front end configuration tool that looks like Visio, offering whatever Operating System works best for you. Need to jumpstart/kickstart/ghost another 2000 workstations? Just click on a few buttons, and select "Install". Sun has heard all these arguments on this page, and it HAS changed its strategy. It is now working very hard to be the heterogeneous integrator for everyone who doesn't want give their money to Big Blue. Period. Even if it means sleeping with Microsoft. Sun is now one of the biggest distributers and supporters of Linux (as long as China pays). It may have taken awhile for them to join the Linux market, but they are devoting a lot of time and money to it now. Sun got JDS (SuSE based Java Desktop System) on walmart.com. So what if there's a chance that end-users will have trouble with it...start your own JDS helpdesk company and get in on selling support contracts for all those Microsoft-migrating users! It's a great opportunity! And all this Microsoft deal means is that Scott can't bad-mouth Bill in public for 10 years. For god's sake, he dressed up in a Penguin suit to promote Tux...what other CEO has done that?

  4. This article is ridiculous on Sun and Microsoft Make Nice · · Score: 1

Sun is not selling a version of it's "Java software" to compete with Microsoft Windows, it is selling Suse Linux to compete with Microsoft. Sun sells both RedHat and Suse and has invested a LOT of money in the past two years in embracing and adding to Linux. JDS, which has sold millions of copies, is Suse Linux, bundled with StarOffice, Mozilla, Evolution, and a little gui that lets you globally set your JDK home. Sun is one of the top distributers of Linux now, if not THE top distributer after the Ireland gov deal. It is certainly NOT "at war" with it. These analysts who say that Sun and Microsoft are bonding against Linux are idiots. Sun is simply becoming another IBM GS, and will sell you whatever you want; Suse, RedHat, Solaris, or Microsoft, running on Sparc, Intel, or AMD. And this is because it has to change or die. It took a couple years longer than it should have for the execs to figure it out, but they did. Read the marketing info on Sun's web site. Their goal is to corner the heterogenous data center market with software that works on everything, including Windows. Why do you think they got rights to networking protocols? They are going to make Java work better on MS systems. And yes, MS could have totally ignored Sun for years without settling. All this means is that Scott will have to find someone else to abuse in public for next 10 years, and that will probably be IBM.
