  1. Blackberry's Demise... on What Apple Can Learn From BlackBerry Not To Do (informationweek.com) · · Score: 1

Was the result of being the worst smartphone of the bunch. I've used them for years, (because I have to), and my current model is so unintuitive and poorly designed that I've stopped wearing it. I actually wish I had my old Curve because it was more usable. Consumers don't remember them giving access to foreign governments. They wanted Angry Birds.

  2. These are kids building projects, right? on 9th-Grader May Face Charges After Homemade Clock Mistaken For Bomb · · Score: 1
This kind of thing really gets my goat. I put into the context of myself when I was a kid. I brought stuff I built into school all the time. Things that lit up or buzzed or counted up or down with LED digits.

Once when I went through my "High Voltage" phase, I build a small project box with a transformer, momentary switch and a 9 volt battery. When you interrupted the circuit it collapsed the field and produced a small electric shock. I built it in a box marked "Lie Detector"! I had fun all day tricking people with it. Today, I would have been sued or arrested.

In the end, engineering and electronics became big areas of exploration in my life and career. It's sad to see this happen to a kid because the negative impact is indelible. Reminds me of the Aqua Teen LED sign event in Boston in 2007.

The whole reason for a second opinion. Having watched three woman in my family develop Breast Cancer only to find out that the lesions were visible for years on prior x-rays and were missed by the original radiologists. In the era, you have to be your own medical advocate.

    This is good news.

For those of use who use flash (for instructional simulations) this means (hopefully) new tools and a chance to deal with the accessibility issues flash has.

While AS3 has improved accessibility classes, products like Articulate and Camtasia have been slow to enable them in their products.

  5. New MagSafe Connector has poor strain relief on Dangerous Apple Power Adapters? · · Score: 1

While I agree that the new MagSafe DC Supply Wire is thicker, it's also supplies two different voltage levels and higher amperages. This doesn't mean that the internal insulation (which appears to be a point of failure) is thicker. To make matters worse, the strain relief at both ends of the DC line is poorer than my G4 powerbook supply. The computer side of the DC line on the Magsafe connector has little more than a piece of flexible shrink tubing extending a centimeter down the line.
The components I build home-brew are afforded better protection than this.

  6. Just had a new MBP die... on Apple's Growing Pains · · Score: 1

Just bought a 15" MBP. Worked great for 7 days while I burned it in. It had the whine, did'nt get that hot compared to my 15" Powerbook. Anyway, this morning it wouldn't wake up. On reboot, it was silent, no chime. Did the usual stuff - zap pram, reset PM, etc... Still dead. Called Apple service. No problem. I explained what I'd done, the rep understood that I knew Macs and didn't take me through all the usual - "Is it plugged in" routines. It's probably the logic board, and Apple will ship a box out to return it for repair. Hopefully, it will only be a week or two in transit. We'll see how that goes. I've bought about a hundred Macs for myself and clients. This is the second dead system I've had, the other being a PPC IMac that was DOA. Not a bad track record in my book.

The fact is, most of the health problems (or most of the problems, period) we face as humans, ie: cellular degeneration, bacterial infections, etc. have some analog in other forms of nature.

The production of antibiotics by fungi and other bacteria to reduce the population of competing organisms has been honed by centuries of evolution. If preserved, supported and studied the processes, and the compounds are there to be used.

The science is slow and tedious, but many of the cultures that live in these rich habitats are well versed in the properties of the flora they have around them.

I also work for a US government agency. We use Flash video with Closed Caption functionality all the time. It can be made compliant if you develop properly. And for developing interactive models for training it's difficult to beat. Currently the flash player is part of the standard image that is deployed on our XP workstations, but this is the type of thing that will get it pulled off those very installations. Java is not an option. Macromedia is really being shortsighted in bundling any additional software in their player. Please don't screw this platform up.

  9. High Level of Human Intervention Required on Virginia Begins to Worry About Voting Machines · · Score: 5, Interesting
NPR just did a story on this. The issue with the system is that there are a number of security steps that the poll workers are required to follow. Failure to follow all the steps exactly as prescribed will open the system to fraud.

Sounds alot like every other voting system.

My experience with poll workers is that they are serious and committed folks. But they are not the most savvy with computers and that may be the biggest security challenge.
