  1. Re:Yawn... on Wal-Mart Music Download Service Launches · · Score: 2, Interesting

It is unfortunate and my heart bleeds for them

What exactly does it bleed? It would seem from the rest of your post that you are a hardline, anything-not-illegal-goes cheap-labor Republican hell-bent on defending the rights of us priveledged folks to cash in on the misery and lack of rights of others in the world. Does the fact that people can't fucking eat on those wages while continuing to live indoors have no effect on you?

We could go further and point out how the unquestioning, God-gave-me-the-fucking-right-because-I'm-American capitalism you apparently espouse (along with most Republicans I know) is the reason we make so little progress toward attainable ends like eradicating world hunger, fighting AIDS in Africa, ensuring gender and racial equality, ending extreme poverty, and maybe even paying people a little more than so-called minimum wage.

And just for the record, I have a friend who has worked at WalMart for 10 years, and is just now working up the guts to leave. He's a manager there, and they pay him less than $28,000/yr, and take $230 from each of his checks for health insurance. They also actively promote the idea that there are no other solid jobs out there, and that if you leave WalMart, you'll just have to come back because you'll be laid off within a year anyway. So fuck the apolegetics for WalMart. This is one of the hardest-working guys I know, and because he doesn't bitch and whine, throw tantrums and threaten to quit, he has associates working under him who make more.

The point of all this is that it does make a difference whether we pay attention to human misery! Other people in the world deserve fair pay for their work, just as much as you do, and our consumerist culture has grown the idea that what happens on the other side of the world doesn't matter, as long as I can get my new toaster for $10 less than that guy down the street is selling them. My wife and I seek out and buy fair-trade goods, because even if we pay a couple dollars more for them, we're supporting the producer, and that makes a difference on a worldwide scale. Get your head out of your wallet and try to think about how your actions effect other people on the planet.

So I return to my opening question? What exactly does your heart bleed? Likely not something I want anywhere near me...

The complaint isn't that MS won't package RealCrap on their install disc. The complaint is that supposedly MS is, by predatory and restrictive licencing, essentially forbidding manufacturers from packaging competitors' media players.

Otherwise, you're right, this would be absurd. If the actual accusation were in fact the case, this would be essentially a smaller "browser war," but it clearly is not, as many Dell customers on Slashdot have attested.

Not to mention iMac, iBook, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iLife, iMic... In one way it's nice, because it is easy to recognize all of the above as being somehow related. I've thought before that KDE seems to be trying to sell itself as an operating system more than a DE. It's like so many people I've talked to who think that RedHat is its own operating system, rather than one distribution of a much larger OS community. It's all in the name of branding, I suppose...

And I should add, of course, that you're assuming people around here know what that "win" prefix is. Never heard of it, myself. :)

I've really got to stop reading /. because every time I read something like this, I get all frustrated with the ridiculous means the powerful will use to stay powerful. If the RFID tracking assertion is true, am I right in imagining that it probably has no innocuous intention behind it? Or am I just crazy and paranoid because of what's happening to my country right now (USA)?

I just want to go move to some Mediteranean island and grow a garden, buy from the local small businesspeople, and live life free and simple. Is it too much to ask that the folks "in charge" let a true people's democracy develop without being waylaid and corrupted by corporate and special interests?

Whoa. That just got a lot broader than it started! Sorry about that... life in conservative parts of the country gets a bit depressing sometimes :)

Really? I thought it was that hit-song formula we've read about here on /.

Isn't it some kind of progression, like looking at where bands like nSync/Backstreet Boys fell short, and then constructing the new-and-improved version based on what was right and/or wrong with the old ones? I think some West Coast school of popular music science was working on this one...

I don't know why a fresh install is said to be preferable (kinda doesn't make sense if the installer is done correctly), but when I upgraded to Jag"wire" I used the Archive and Install option, which at least saved everything I had installed so I didn't have to backup/recopy music and video folders (the biggest).

It worked beautifully, and most apps simply regenerated their system folder files so only a few required a reinstall.

  10. Re:What is wrong with X? on OpenOffice.org for Mac Delayed Two Years · · Score: 4, Insightful
My biggest problem is that I'm new-ish to Unix, having been raised as an MS user and converted to Mac 5 or 6 years ago. I'm learning, but slowly, and I don't have a lot of time to devote to getting down and dirty with X11 and Unix-y stuff.

On their site, OOo says the X11 version is for the "Unix-Savvy" user, and I thought that maybe I was savvy enough a while back and tried it. I couldn't even get all the components installed correctly, which told me that I probably should be messing around as root in X11, lest I royally screw my machine.

The point it, I could make very good use out of a native version of OOo (wouldn't it be nice to abandon MSOffice completely!), but am simply not l33t enough to safely and comfortably get around in X11 and run that version.

  11. Re:Igor engraver.... on Music Software for Mac OS X? · · Score: 2, Interesting
I'm not wild about Igor Engraver. In my experience, it's extremely unstable, rather counter-intuitive ("L" for a slur, short-keys for articulations and rhythmic values mixed together, multiple unnecesary windows open during note entry, etc.), and the output doesn't look half as nice as Sibelius or even Finale.

I was also amused/appalled that in more than one place, you can click a button/command, and get a dialogue saying that "this feature has not yet been implemented." Mind telling me what the interface for it is doing there, then?

Igor feels to me like early beta-level software, and a beta version of something that should have been released a couple years ago at that (of course, I've only used it in Windows XP, so maybe it's better on Mac... but where's the OS X version??).

  12. My two cents as a professional user on Music Software for Mac OS X? · · Score: 5, Informative

I'm a composer, and have to say that Sibelius (www.sibelius.com) is my top choice overall. I used Finale (www.finalemusic.com) for years, and only switched because I had to learn Sibelius in order to teach it and absolutely fell in love with it. It's powerful, graceful, not too difficult to use (although, like Finale, more advanced features are a bit more complicated), and VERY importantly, Mac OS X native (I don't use non-native software. Those who haven't been able to update their software within the past 2.5 years don't deserve my business).

What's more, Sibelius is fast becoming a co-industry-standard format along with Finale, so publishers, competitions, other composers, etc. etc., will more than likely be able to access any files you need to send them. It also converts Finale files rather well (when saved as .EPS files), with minimal cleanup to do.

It's all about the best tool for the job, and as far as the professional music community is concerned, it's either Finale or Sibelius. Both are good, Finale is not OS X native (though they promise to be in version 2004), and Sibelius is excellent, so I chose Sibelius.

A word of warning, however: Sibelius is have some kind of MIDI playback problem with Quicktime MIDI in 10.2.4+ which has not been remedied. Using an external MIDI device clears it up completely, but if you're relying on Quicktime built-in MIDI, stay at 10.2.3 or below (including 10.1.x)...
